OK x1 users: show me your sharpness.

Hi Edward,

Having taken a good look at the DNG file you posted earlier today I agree with other posters here that this is not of the standard you should expect from your X1. There seems to be a general buzz around the fine details throughout the entire image and the plane of critical focus I could not ascertain.

Sorry, but I think this needs to be examined by Leica if this is typical of what you get from the camera. I would suggest sending them this file and asking their opinion.

I honestly believe that my X1 in the same conditions as here would have yielded a significantly better file.

here is the shot I was talking about.. look at the canon logo (on the body not lens cap), blue fringing. That's a link to the full size.

looks like I'll have to send it back :(

I see the blue fringing, but on the other hand look how sharp the words "Canon" and "Ultrasonic" are on the lens cap. Before sending the camera back, I'd suggest one quick test. Put the camera on a tripod (even if the shutter speed is relatively fast) and try a few shots in both AF and MF. With a small camera like this, it's easy to get some blur caused by camera shake even at 1/250th, and the tripod could rule this out as a possibility.

Hi Brent,

Thanks for the thoughts, I have done that as well. It will be interesting to see what leica says. Thank you for your time and help.

If Leica says there's nothing wrong with the camera, you better get checked out for Parkinsons. lol

Good luck.

Here's a Raw file shot yesterday. Maybe I'm expecting too much, but this doesn't beat my 7d, or even my gf1 I don't think.

This is one of several shots I took for the sake of comparison to the m9.

Thanks for the feedback.

Hard to say IF there is any issue as the light is very harsh and not much contrast. Obviously I do not have a reference image to be able to tell.

I have uploaded a few DNGs and corresponding OOC jpgs from my X1 in case you want to take a look. DNGs and OOC Samples

Edward,

I believe it'll be more telling if we have the same scene shot by the M9 and better still the panasonic/canon which is what you're comparing with.

Here are a couple of shots, not sure if these help, but let me know what you're looking for and I'll see if I can help out. I, too, have wondered about the sharpness and detail at times, especially of the DNGs. And other times, not so much... These are unprocessed DNGs and OOC JPGs.

I was toying with the B&W Hi-contrast JPGs for the OOC on and off, but I can find some color JPGs for different DNGs or go out and take some if you'd like more help. I specifically took the building a few months ago to test sharpness because there's so much detail on the building.

IIRC I focused on the top near corner of the building, which should effectively have been infinity... And I tried to focus on the kid's eyes, but I think I got his hat/forehead.

I haven't yet heard back from leica, despite their two deadlines having passed. Very friendly customer service, but they shouldn't set a deadline they can't hit, just tell me you cant evaluate them for a few days. No big deal though, I expected it to take a bit.

jawatkin - that building shot is exactly what I was looking for - would you mind (if needed) if i gave leica that link as a comparison?

Thanks a lot for taking the time to put those up, very helpful

btw the candid shot is adorable. Love goldens.

Absolutely go for it.... If you need anything else, let me know, I live in NYC and can take tons of building photos :)

You should've seen this kid... He was pulling her ears and holding her mouth shut and she was loving every minute of it!

Just heard back from leica, they have asked me to send in the camera saying it is not representative of the quality that should be seen.

They asked me to pack it up and send it to nj, after 3 days they will mail me a warranty repair sheet, then they will fix the camera and return.

The minimum time I see the camera being gone is three weeks, hopefully it won't be more than a month. :/

Hopefully at the end of this I will see the rewards and understand the iq comparisons I have seen made!

Me too! The weird thing is the iq problems seem to only present focusing far off or even maybe at infinity... Closer shots are good. Since it happens with mf or af it makes me wonder if for some reason the lens is not focusing because of a mechanical limitation?

But I know absolutely nothing about camera mechanics.
