robert_parker Posted November 12, 2010 Share #1 Posted November 12, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Everyone It's been mooted several times amongst the London Leica Louts that a day trip be made to Paris, ideally during the 'Dog days' between Chriswtmas and New Year. So here we go...... Note that though the idea comes from London, all are very definitely welcome. The proposal is that we meet at St Pancreas Station on the 29th (December, otherwise the idea doesen't work ) and catch the 8.02 GMT train outwards to The City of Light (or Paris if easier), coming back on the 21:13 CET train to London. A possible itinerary would be: 1) Walk up from the Gare du Nord to Sacre Coeur (taxi / Metro also possible) 2) Decend on the terrified residents of the rue d'Abesses for a sandwich / coffee / cake 3) Travel by Metro to the Musee Albert Kahn for a visit to view the Autochromes from the turn of the Century, photographic gear and gardens 4) Back to Trocadero for a view of the Eiffel Tower, which could well light up if the timing is right and we can find the plug 5) Free time to rampage, as you would be well placed for Concorde, Boul. Haussman, rue de Rivoli, etc. meeting back at the station just in time to miss the 21:13 CET train. If you are interested, would you signify by replying to this thread or by PM. robert_parker Posted November 12, 2010 Author Share #2 Posted November 12, 2010 Just to add: There is a further option of travelling by 'Leisure Select', which includes a light breakfast and evening meal and much more roomy and comfortable surroundings for GBP183.50 round trip, (which could be useful bearing in mind the times of departure and return, how tight standard class Eurostar seats are these days and that the cost of the breakfast and evening meal is included) so if this interests you please signify, though I must add that I'll ultimately need to be guided by numbers and may have to favour a majority decison. Alas, 'Leisure Select' was severely downgraded this autumn. It is now rebranded as ''Premier Select', so hot breakfast and meals are no longer served. robert_parker Posted November 14, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted November 14, 2010 I agree - I think the main advantage is really the greater space and the fact that they at least offer a meal out and a meal back at no extra cost, which saves hassle, lining up, etc., if you budget 8 - 10 Euros either way for a sandwich and a coffee, which is fairly modest, the cost diferential doesen't seem too bad. Add to that, that, the last one back on that day for Ashord is at 16:55. Probably be easier to hop the ferry to Calais and train from there!!!! As an exercise I tried it this way: 20 min drive to Dover 90 min Dover - Calais (£6 as a foot passenger) 90 min Calais Frethun - Paris Nord (TGV £42 return) I need to work out the logistics before committing. I used to get off at that stop every day when I was working in St Cloud, and since I hadn't heard of Kahn never bothered to go to the museum. I'm still kicking myself. I'd make sure it's open before setting off. If you get off at Motte Picquet Grenelle on the way back, there's a section of elevated metro to look at, and it's about 15 mins walk from the Eiffel Tower. Enjoy the trip. Thanks Steve - I understand it's ok for that day, it's Sundays and New Year you have to be careful - I'll see what can be done with Motte Picquet Grenelle, as it'll probably be necessary to change somewhere around Michael Ange Molitor / Javel anyway although if it comes to it there is a bit of an industrialised elevated section near the top of Boul Magenta which is only a slight stretch the wrong way going to Sacre Coeur Ps It's a shame you couldn't make it, too Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Having just corresponded with the Haut Seine council, it appears that Steve's right in that the Musee Albert Kahn and gardens are closed on the 29th. and re-open on the 4th January 2011.
