martha Posted November 10, 2010 Share #1 Posted November 10, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello again, patient M8 and 8.2 users. I have two issues with my brand new 8.2. 1. My camera came with Firmware 2.000. I just followed the instructions in the handbook and downloaded the newer firmware 2.005 onto an SD card, placed it back in the camera, turned on the power. There is no prompt asking me if I really, really want to accept this firmware update, as it says in the book. Is there a secret step I am unaware of? 2. I attached a coded lens to the camera, turned it on, pressed INFO, and got NO image(as illustrated in the handbook) of a schematic of the lens, suggested aperture and distance. Again, is there a secret or not so secret step or password and handshake attached to this function? I am not a dunce and am 98% sure that I have followed all of the instructions, as written. HELP! Thanks, in advance, martha

jaapv Posted November 10, 2010 Share #2 Posted November 10, 2010 Did you unzip the file? Did you place it in the root next to the DCIM folder?
martha Posted November 10, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted November 10, 2010 Jaap: Do you meand, did I actually, manualy move it over the the DCIM? If so, yes. I also unzipped. Perhaps I should try it again.
Aviator Posted November 10, 2010 Share #4 Posted November 10, 2010 Not to the DCIM folder. In the root folder!
martha Posted November 10, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted November 10, 2010 Aviator: I guess I am a dunce, as I don't know what the "root folder" is.
jaapv Posted November 10, 2010 Share #6 Posted November 10, 2010 Open the drive (card) You will see the folder DCIM. Do not put the .upd file in that folder, but next to it, outside.
ho_co Posted November 11, 2010 Share #7 Posted November 11, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) martha-- As for the lens diagram: It occurs only when the camera is in "Snapshot Mode" and when the lens is shorter than 50mm. (Maybe only for 35mm?) Don't worry about "root folders." We all had to learn the term when we bought cameras with user-updatable firmware. Read the instructions and look at the pictures. I think Leica does a good job of including all the necessary steps, even if the terminology isn't familiar. It'll work. And if you're still having trouble, come back for more inconsequential abuse. There've been many questions just exactly like yours.
CharlesL Posted November 11, 2010 Share #8 Posted November 11, 2010 The root folder on the card is the folder to which all other folders on the card are subfolders or subsubfolders or... Ditto for the root folder on your hard drive. The root folder is not given a name like DCIM, rather a symbol, typically \ or /. Like any folder it can hold files, so you place the firmware file in it, and it becomes a member of the root folder just like DCIM.
MikeMyers Posted November 11, 2010 Share #9 Posted November 11, 2010 Think of the "root folder" as representing a single drawer filing cabinet, into which anything else gets placed, including a "DCIM folder" which is where your pictures go. You can put folders into the filing cabinet. You can also drop your lunch or a book into the cabinet. You can put stuff in folders, or just into the drawer. If you're really into computers, you'll know why people refer to it as " / " but if not, no big deal. If you're into digital photography, you'll eventually learn all about that stuff anyway. Or, Wikipedia has another way to imagine this: "To use the example of a physical file cabinet, if the separate drawers in the file cabinet are represented as the highest level of sub-directories in the file system or system prompt, then the room the file cabinet is in, may be represented as the root directory. That is, the other directories may be inside it, but the root directory cannot go in any other directories, at least in that file system. In most operating systems, files can be placed inside the root directory, as well in its sub-directories. One may envision this as placing paper files anywhere in the room, or into any file cabinet within the room."
martha Posted November 11, 2010 Author Share #10 Posted November 11, 2010 Thank you, gentlemen, for your patience and support. The only lens I own that is currently coded is a Summarit 90mm. THAT's why I don't get the diagram. I am understanding now what and where to put the file. Again, thanks, --martha
