A Great Voigtlander Viewfinder Source, and new guy introduction

Lost.

Hello Leica Forum!

As I'm impatiently waiting for my X1 to arrived I found it nearly impossible to find a Voigtlander 35mm viewfinder for it. In my search I found this source and had a great experience with the purchase. Both Silver and Black in stock and it only took two days to arrive.

I have no affiliation with the seller, only a (almost) Leica shooter.

For now all I have is a viewfinder and handgrip... usually I don't worry about "accessorizing" things, but being an SLR shooter, I know I'm going to want to keep shooting properly with the camera stuck to my face, and one handed shooting is also important to me.

It's kind of sad just looking at these two pieces, but the X1 should be here soon! :)

In preparation of more worldwide motorcycle adventure travels I sold my 5DII and lenses to switch to the X1. It's just become such a burden to travel, especially in the rough wilderness with such a large heavy camera.

Since I pretty much used the 35mm 1.4L lens exclusively in my travels and am aware of the X1's "quirks" I think the size and convenience outweighs any IQ shortcoming the X1 might have compared to the 5DII. From all the images I've seen from the X1, I believe the limitations will only be from what's behind the camera...

Anyways, just thought I'd try and contribute a little if someone's looking for a viewfinder and having trouble finding one like I was and say hello to the forum.

Cheers!

Finn

I think you made a good choice with the X1 in your case. Traveling with a 2kg camera gear is no joke, and we are talking about one lens.

I found the X1 to be the best camera I have ever used for traveling. Its limitation is only macro and telephoto, but these are not the kind of shots I take when traveling. My DSLR is for product shots and sports (which I hardly shoot anyway).

Think you WILL like the X1.

And IMHO, no, you do not need a VF. I took thousands of what I think are good pictures and never felt the real need for the VF, or the grip, and yes, I do shoot one hand often. I find a good wrist strap more important for stability.

Right on, thanks!

well, habits are hard to break so we'll see if I "need" the VF... plus, wont I get many more photo's per battery charge without using the screen to frame?

Taking photo's while riding a motorcycle with one hand going 100 km/hr on dirt roads... I'll take all the grip I can get....

(not taken with X1, sorry)

With normal usage I get 250 to 300 shots with quick review of images shot.

In fact, I have a spare battery which is hardly needed, maybe because I generally do not exceed 200 shots per day even when traveling.

The battery life of the X1 is actually quite impressive, think it has to do with the crappy LCD and low power processor they use which drains less power maybe? All in all a fine machine that takes "leicasque" photos...:)

I think canon and nikon draws differently from the X1, the X1 photos to my eyes spell less "digital" to my eyes, and colors more natural and pleasant compared to my Nikon. The photo you took is very pretty, but I cant put my finger on it, it has a very "digital" look. Dont get me wrong, I think youre a great photographer from your shot (better than me I think) but what I honestly feel is that armed with an X1 you will be empowered to take even greater pictures compared to your canon!

That's good information. Thanks.

I agree, unless I'm doing a time lapse (which I can't do with the X1 with a remote timer) :(

I wouldn't normally exceed 200 shots a day, even in the most of interesting locations.

Normally I can charge a battery off my bike, but with some planned rides in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc. on small a Minsks bikes, I won't have the charging capacity that my BMW's have here in North America.... and I will try to be in the most remote of areas. I don't fancy cities much... I already live in one of the finest in the world! Chicago. ;) but don't find city street photography to be my thing. I mean, if I must....

You could be correct, and I might not need a VF, but just playing with it on my Lumix LX-3, I like it and can see me using it because that's what I like. I also got a kick out of how the box said, Voigtlander, since 1756.... now that's a company that's been around a while! :D

Can you disable the review function on the X1? I'm all about squeezing the most out of it.

cheers

If you really like the VF experience then you'll be fine with the Voightlander. I tried it when I first bought the X1. Nice and clear, though the Leica's version appears brighter and nicer (the CV is metal though, Leica's plastic). When I tried the VF especially at close range framing was off, but I guess once you're used to it then ok. The salesperson selling the VF told me it is actually not necessary, he saw the X1 as a high-end P&S so a VF is not necessary. Talk about honesty.

Yes, I believe you can disable the auto review, but even with that on battery life is great. Buy an extra battery in your case, I think.

Nice shot, I'm trying to work out how you got the camera in landscape while holding the bars with the other hand!

I think you'll appreciate the viewfinder, I got the leica one. Like most people coming from a dslr it seems wrong not to look through the viewfinder, but it doesn't give you enough feedback to rely on it for focus (either manual or auto) so it makes sense to use the screen to set focus, or at least check what the camera is focused on then compose the shot with the viewfinder.

Like you I'm planning to take the X1 on a bike trip, last big one I took a D200 and 2 lenses. The IQ is amazing I much prefer it to the D200, but I miss the response times.

Goes to show leica people like shots taken with canons but hate canon for what is stands for.........

Well, a tool might not be comfortable for you to use, but you can still appreciate what is made with the tools by other people ...
