I like them all... And I'll eventually own one of each generation.

My latest aquisition is an R6.2... Fantastic performer and very straight forward to use.

Next on the list is an R9. The DMR scares me. I'm disappointed that Leica won't fix them. If they did still support them I would get one tomorrow.

But, They will fix just about any film camera they've ever made. I just don't get it.

Then "they" need to get more parts... Or have new ones made.

"getting" more parts means contracting for small production runs using obsolete technology = very costly. Complete re-design of components due to changed laws regarding lead content of components may also be required.

Bottom line: ain't gonna happen. Such is the fate of anything electronic aside from mission-critical military hardware.

The problem is a lack of replacement motherboards. When Imacon stopped producing the DMR for Leica, probably only about 2200 DMRs were produced. A limited stock of spare motherboards and associated electronic components were available. They have now been all used up. Hence no repairs for electronic faults from Leica. 'Marac' in the UK has a friend who has repaired a couple of DMRs with faulty electronics, but he cannot repair every electronic defect in a DMR.

The problem is the supply of parts.

Well they won't fix the Minilux; I have had two rendered useless by the E02 shutter failure after only nine years use, maybe four films a year. Makes a nice paperweight though!

Hello,

I would just like to ask you which model do you think is the best performer of R series?

I have R3 + R6.2 + R8. The R8 is the easiest to use the R6.2 the lightest in weight & I have had the R3 since 8th January 1980 and it has never let me down. I love them all.

That is why I have three R8 bodies, with full MotorDrives. I do a far amount of B&W work for CD covers with Jazz musicians. The R8 is sublime. I can hammer nails all day long & NEVER worry that the R8 will flounder. I owned 2 different R9 bodies, but sold them both. The electronics on the R9 just wasn't bulletproof. I have full confidence in the R8. There just isn't a better SLR film camera.

Just for clarification, the supply of parts for the R8 isn't the problem. It's parts for the DMR that are scare.

My first R8 has been back & forth between here and Allendale several times since January. Once it returns and I verify it's working properly I'll send the other one to repair the light meter. Until this year they've been 100% reliable for me.

I agree, but it is heavy.

Lol, I just re-read my post.

I've since acquired an R8/DMR. Fingers crossed nothing goes wrong... ;)

  • 4 years later...

I just finished buying an R4s.  Beautiful little machine, but when I popped the first roll of film in, and started winding, I was very disappointed in how much torque I had to apply to the lever (much more than my F3 or my OM-4ti or my M4-P).  So the very next morning (ie, 10 minutes ago), I ordered an R8.  Hopefully the manual winder on this one will be easier to deal with.
