How many X1's will be made?

I don`t know how many X1 will be made, but I`m waiting for the X2 with all the fails of the first model solved, for example the leather cover don`t well bonded, slow autofocus, etc. I had a bad experience with the D Lux 3 without a shoe for the viewfinder, something solved in the D Lux 4.

Why does it matter?

I saw a note somewhere on various Leicas from different eras. Each had a number produced next to it- I mean every camera through modern day. It was a nice compliment to the camera model, it contextualized it in a way.

Considering they are all handmade (including the X1) I figured it wouldn't be very many compared to, let's say, a cannon powershot, especially considering how long many are waiting for theirs.

Hector, I would really wait until the x3 so it works out all the failings of the x2.

(really sorry, just had to, thanks)

Haha yeah I think this topic has been covered in enough threads and beaten to a bloody pulp. Lets be the first thread to stay off that topic or others we all know of with similar ubiquitousness.

It's not a limited edition so who knows, and more importantly, who cares? The market will ultimately decide.

Since I can't ask the question any more directly, it should be obvious that I care!

Thank you for your insight- I will go ask the market what she's decided! Funny, her choice didn't have too much immediate impact on the long waiting lists!

It's a handmade camera from Germany. Anyone have any idea as to the production capacity atleast? It doesn't seem like anything out of Germany Leicas ever made comes out very quickly. Thanks.

And this should be basic even to children but I now see the need to say it explicitly: if you have a problem with this question either go to the next thread or cordially suggest a better place to ask it!

It probably depends on how many they sell.

Really, these are questions that can't be answered - or rather not my anyone here. So if a question can't be answered, and isn't posed rhetorically, what's the point?

Since I can't ask the question any more directly, it should be obvious that I care! - Why? If the answer is 100,000 or 1,000,000 what difference does it actually make to you? I'm curious.

It's not handmade, it's assembled in Germany from parts shipped in from other countries, i.e. the sensor, electronics, lens assembly etc. It's normal for items to be produce in batches - why not ask Leica how many X1 bodies they've commissioned?

1) You're right it's irrelevant and that's why production numbers are listed next to every historical Leica.

2) "The Market" "told me" that it was in high "demand" when I was on a 15 person long waiting list that lasted months. Yet the fact that Leica can't meet demand is interesting and further adds to the wonder of how many they may make

3) "It's not handmade it's assembled" - yes... BY HAND IN GERMANY. Yes yes we all know it has parts form other countries just like everything else but the Pannys and the Leica pannys are not having trouble meeting demand- the hand assembly is the bottleneck.

Look there are enough smart asses like you on the forum who make definitive statements about Leicas and I don't know where you find this stuff. This is hardly the most crazy unanswerable question on the X1 forum and I thought maybe someone would have this answer.

I withdraw my question it's not worth the headache of reading this crap every night.

Yes, historical, that's because they've stopped making them and know how many they've made. It's of interest for collectors as some of the lower production items are of course more desirable/valuable. I doubt many will collect old X1's in 60 years time!

It seems that dealers now have stock.

Panasonic have a different production process to Leica, they produce a complete batch of cameras and then ship. Leica are shipping as they make them. Yes they're a smaller company so it takes them more time to get boxes out of the doors.

If you were a smart arse you would have contacted Leica directly, they're the only people who could possibly answer your question, have you thought of doing that? (although I very much doubt they'd give you an answer)

… the operative word being “historical”. Once the X1 is history we may learn how many X1 will have been manufactured. But until then we will not.
