Clemgill Posted October 19, 2010 Share #1 Â Posted October 19, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, Â I noticed a slight halo on strong (unburned) highlights such as on the attached pictures (only cropped from the X1 DNGs, see around the vertical post). It can be corrected under Lightroom with the "Clarity" slide. But I was wondering if some of you had already noticed this effect and what to think about it? Is it real or is it an artefact from my monitor? Â Thx, Â Gilles.

phancj Posted October 19, 2010 Share #4 Â Posted October 19, 2010 Strange...never saw these before...maybe its the legendary Leica glow? Â I am just wild guessing maybe it looks to me like your lens was smudged or something a sort of diffusion...
jsrockit Posted October 19, 2010 Share #5 Â Posted October 19, 2010 Well...I did say almost. I've had flare occur from reflections as well... with the sun behind me.
h00ligan Posted October 19, 2010 Share #6 Â Posted October 19, 2010 nothing was done to this? Was it raw or jpg? Â This is what happens when you drag the clarity slider the other way.. so it seems odd to me that this is an untouched photo. I don't have the same experience at any aperture... fwiw. Dan States Posted October 19, 2010 Share #7 Â Posted October 19, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) That's some pretty noticeable flare. You could have an element with faulty coating which would cause this effect. It's rare, but has happened before, particularly in a run of Tri-Elmar's that Leica had to repair. The X1 lens is very flare resistant in its correct state, so I'd take some more shots to verify and if it keeps happening, send it to Leica or ask for an exchange from your dealer. Â Good luck! hoppyman Posted October 19, 2010 Share #8 Â Posted October 19, 2010 I would look at the most obvious cause firstly. Have you cleaned the front element of the lens?
JeTexas Posted October 19, 2010 Share #9 Â Posted October 19, 2010 Had you just come outside from an air-conditioned building when you took these? Here in Houston it can take a good 15 minutes before the condensation will burn off your lens. Until then, you get shots with fog like this.
Clemgill Posted October 19, 2010 Author Share #10 Â Posted October 19, 2010 I looked at the front lens ... and indeed there was some uggly finger prints... Cleaned them and it seems the flare has gone. As simple as that...! Â Thanks you all for your replies. Â And kudos to Leica for this wonderful machine. Â Gilles. h00ligan Posted October 22, 2010 Share #17 Â Posted October 22, 2010 If you referenced the david Hamilton I think you did, which is a link I wont click right now, you should definitely warn people that not only are those images not work safe, someone who doesn't know him or what he shoots could easily form certain opinions should they notice you've been viewing his work. Â Yes I know it's technically legal and you can buy his books on amazon, but especially in the USA very large percentage of people would take great issue with a large portion of his work. Â Anyway the point is.. Don't google David Hamilton unless you aren't at work...many people don't consider his stuff art, they consider it soft porn of underage girls. Â I am not passing a judgment either way, just don't want someone getting fired(not the worst case scenario) for clicking a link in here. Â Ialso realize that ymmv especially outside of the USA. Â Edit...I checked. Definitly take heed not to click at work..I'm surprised some related videos from the js YouTube link haven't been removed by them. Again, not a judgment, I know the arguments on both sides.
