Buying S2 on Amazon

I like to buy S2, and don't know if it is better to buy in a local store, or use Amazon. The problem is with warranty. I live in Russia and have mixed opinions about it. Some sellers in Moscow told me that I can't service an US-bought camera in official Russian service shop.

The price in Moscow is $35,000 , or $22,995 here: Amazon.com: Leica S2 37.5MP Interchangeable Lens Camera with 3 inch LCD: Camera & Photo

Too bad you can't just stop by and borrow President Medvedev's camera. ;)

Seriously, that's a huge difference ... the opportunity to acquire several S lenses for the difference. Could you just send the camera directly to Solms for any service issues should they arise?

That is a big difference and certainly worth exploring your options. You may want to call Leica directly and ask them. You may also want to consider the S2-P which includes a better warranty if that will help in your location. The other thing to consider is the price difference would pay for a lot of repairs if something were to happen out of warranty.

Any taxes etc. to pay if you buy it from abroad?

Yes. Just learned that I should pay the 30% import tax.

But I can move it through customs myself and won't pay any cent ;)

Probably I'll go with a German store and visit them myself. Any recommendations?

Hi, I am a Russian member and user of Leica and Sinar MFD equipment. I have been hearing "we will not support a camera if it was bought abroad" claims from every Russian dealer for years. It is not true with the Leica gear. They will have to support the camera here, in Russia. Another story is what constitute the service; as far as I understand, if they have to ship the camera or the lenses to Solms, they will need the proofs of Custom Duties and VAT payments.

In my experience, it is easier to shop abroad and service abroad. The air fare and hotel accommodation in Europe will be cheaper than all the VAT+Duties + Dealer mark-up you have to pay here.

You may have interest in contacting Red Dot Cameras - Leica Cameras, Leica Binoculars, Metz Flashguns, Manfrotto Tripods, Leitz to hear how it will work with buying the camera there taxwise. If you can get the camera without VAT and TAX, or if it has to be shipped to another EU country for it to be that way. I know from earlier that Ivor there is knowledgable about the rules.

You can also check with MEISTER CAMERA Berlin: Home who are also helpful.
