Pecole Posted October 3, 2010 Share #1 Posted October 3, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) In the early 1970s, Leitz had approved the sale (under catalogue number 11003) of the Zeiss-made 15 mm focal length Hologon for the M cameras. This 1:8 fixed aperture lens came with its own viewfinder. It is still a relatively rare item. Here are photos of the Nr. 5736148 as it was included in the Fontenelle Collection. This question has always intrigued me... apparently, Hologon is the only Leica M lens with numbering outside the normal factory range : indeed, same happens for another lens marketed by Leitz, with declared origin from a 3rd party manufacturer (the Angenieux zoom 45-90 for Leicaflex) : I wonder if the item you quote, with the std. Leitz numbering, is a unique, maybe a sort of prototype (Lager displays it, I do not remember to have seen another). The other lenses that Leitz/Leica "outsourced", do not declare the manufacturer , bear the Leitz/Leica name and follow the std. numbering (I refer to the various Minolta and Sigma zooms, the Schneider PA Curtagon, and, for Leica M, the Schneider-made Tele Elmarit 180 and, I think, the first Super Angulon 21). This lens has LEITZ WETZLAR (all in capital letters as written here) on the lens immediately preceding the number. It came in a Leitz box marked "Leicaflex 11202". That's curios... indeed also Van Hasbroek displays a PA Curtagon with a Schneider number (11.xxx.xxx)... but the usual lens' lists (Puts and others) show batches of Curtagons within the "usual" Leitz numbering... ; this happens too for the Leitz-Minolta MR Telyt 500 quoted by Michael... I wonder if maybe they simply assigned "Leica numbers" into their records but, in practice, the lenses kept the s/number of the factory they came from... I suppose it woukd have been difficult, for the simple reason of engraving operations, related toolings etc... but I should be curios to see some BOX... there were times in which Leitz used to put a sticker with lens' s/n on the box... I wonder if could have happened that, for instance, a Schneider-numbered PA Curtagon should have been packaged into a box sticked with the "Leitz" number...
