Advertisement Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 Hi nikonian, Take a look here Steve Huffs review of D-Lux 5 is up. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
leicanut2 Posted September 29, 2010 Share #2 Posted September 29, 2010 How the heck did he get one so soon. Looks like this is a must buy camera. Little brother to x1 or step son to the M9.
JackTheRipper Posted September 29, 2010 Share #3 Posted September 29, 2010 judging by his review, in my opinion, I think the D-lux 5 is the better buy compared to the X1... What do you guys think?
Ecaton Posted September 29, 2010 Share #4 Posted September 29, 2010 judging by his review, in my opinion, I think the D-lux 5 is the better buy compared to the X1... What do you guys think? The Pana is the better buy then its Leica twin. That's my take from the review. The x1 is in a different league.
leicanut2 Posted September 29, 2010 Share #5 Posted September 29, 2010 I am on the D-Lux 5 buy list. Jan
JackTheRipper Posted September 30, 2010 Share #6 Posted September 30, 2010 here is a quote from his website: "The Leica D-Lux 5 will give you different firmware, different body style and looks, a 3 year warranty, and better software. I am hearing Lightroom will be included, which is a GOOD thing. So to those who will come here and comment and bash the D-Lux 5 because it is $300 more, know that you do indeed get MORE with the camera as well as the joy of owning a Leica :-) " looks like he's a fan of the Leica to me... barjohn Posted September 30, 2010 Share #8 Posted September 30, 2010 I like his review and images but the review seemed more positive than the one Sean Reid did and Sean's test images of ISO showed quite a bit of noise above ISO 400 where Steve seemed to show better images at ISO 800. A little confusing if you read both reviews. As for the $300 buying you more the the Pany version, I guess it depends on whether you need LR 3. If you already have it, maybe they should give you a $150 discount.
stephen.w Posted September 30, 2010 Share #9 Posted September 30, 2010 I can't believe they have actually made this camera bigger than it was in it's previous incarnation! I would have thought the only point of a 'serious' small sensor camera is its small size. At this price - 500 dollars, even for the Panasonic - I'd rather get the Olympus E-PL1 or else something tuly pocketable like the Canon S95, with the same if not better image quality and coming in at 100 dollars less. normanf Posted September 30, 2010 Share #10 Posted September 30, 2010 Great review of a PanaLeica... you could get the German-made Leica X-1 from Solms, Germany, but why would you spend $2,000 for it? This is a nifty little camera that delivers all the Leica features at a fraction of the price. Disclosure: I own the LX-3 and its a great little camera but the LX-5 is a worthy successor to a much loved camera. You won't regret the upgrade after you've read Steve Huff's review! JackTheRipper Posted September 30, 2010 Share #11 Posted September 30, 2010 I beg to differ about the Panasonic being the better buy. I think the Leica warranty is worth every extra penny. Not to mention the Leica is a status symbol when people see it (sorry, but it just is). The average person probably doesn't think very highly of Panasonics, but would easily be intrigued about the Leica. Plus, I don't have lightroom and that software alone is very expensive. I also trust that Leica's firmware will be better than Panasonic's... I also really would like to get the brown leather Leica case seen here: http://www.letsgodigital.org/images/artikelen/25/leica-d-lux-4.jpg it's just amazingly cool... (I do understand the 5 will be a lil different)...
manie_de Posted September 30, 2010 Share #12 Posted September 30, 2010 I own the Panasonic LX3 and love this little gem. Preferred it over the D-Lux 4 because of a price difference of 200 - 300 Euros and still happy with it. But now with the LX5/D-Lux 5 I'll probably get me the Leica, because the bundled Lightroom 3 cost here in Germany about 250 Euros and with this in mind the price gap between these two cameras isn't that wide ! Longer guarantee, maybe better firmware (a matter for discussion since the LX3/D-Lux 4) and, last but not least, the red dot for some of us. The grip of the LX5 would be nice, but the puristic design of the D-Lux 5 is satisfying enough. BTW, will there be a D-Lux 5 in silver ??? (I do understand the 5 will be a lil different)... In the end, the Pana as well as the Pana-Leica are both overpriced, the former quite and the latter ridiculously. With mfts, Sony nex, Samsung nx offering significantly better IQ and, depending ond the body lens combination, at similar or lower prices, there is not much going for "serious" small sensor cameras anymore as far as I'm concerned. Except if they are really shirt pocketable, such as the Ricoh GRD 3 or Canon 95.
Lee Martin Posted September 30, 2010 Share #14 Posted September 30, 2010 I've not seen a detailed review as yet, but does anyone know if they have included global positioning so that you cal log where your photo's have been taken ? as its obviously on the cheaper compact. I'm happy with my D-Lux 4, it now has the lens it should have had from the start, but i'm reluctant to spend the same money again.
jsrockit Posted September 30, 2010 Share #15 Posted September 30, 2010 judging by his review, in my opinion, I think the D-lux 5 is the better buy compared to the X1... What do you guys think? Sure, it's cheaper... but better buy? That depends on your needs. I'd be very sad if I gave up my X1 for the DL5... very sad. The DL5 is just another P&S to me (despite it being a very good one). The X1 is a serious tool for my needs.
Shootist Posted September 30, 2010 Share #16 Posted September 30, 2010 I'd rather get the Olympus E-PL1 or else something tuly pocketable like the Canon S95, with the same if not better image quality and coming in at 100 dollars less. I have a S90 Canon and I'm truly hoping the image quality is much better from the Pana/Leica LX/D-Lux 5 and I can really use the 24mm lens along with the lower f/stop at the max telephoto setting. The S90 is f/4.9 @ 105 and f/4.5 @ 85. I bought the S90 so I wouldn't have to carry my M8 and lenses all the time but the IQ isn't the best.
nippa Posted October 2, 2010 Share #17 Posted October 2, 2010 Interesting review but reads like something from a fanboy. Just a shame we couldn't be permitted to see all of the pictures at original size straight from the camera ; none of Steve's images beat my X1 or GF-1 images so what should I make of his narrative?. I like the new lens focal lengths but I'm still not convinced that image quality is better than my Dlux4 at base ISO. I'll wait for the DPreview tests. And the preset focal lengths are just something that Panasonic borrowed from Canon's S90. Nothing wrong with that, but at the same time nothing to get excited about. barjohn Posted October 4, 2010 Share #19 Posted October 4, 2010 I just looked at the LX3 and LX5 images at ISO 400, 800 and 1600 here Digital Cameras, Digital Camera Reviews - The Imaging Resource! using their comparator and what I see is that while the LX5 appears to have less noise it is at the expense of losing all of the detail and sharpness. The resulting images are soft and smeared. The LX3 images preserve the detail and look much sharper despite having more visible noise.
Ecaton Posted October 5, 2010 Share #20 Posted October 5, 2010 LX5 500 USD, Leica D-lux 5 800 USD. And the Samsung NX100 with 20-50 zoom sells for USD 500:eek:
