vish Posted September 21, 2010 Share #1 Posted September 21, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi y'all, I can't find my gaffer tape, which always leaves me fuming. But I did find the Gorilla Tape I picked up in the US, and I'm about to cover swathes of my kit with it. Does anyone think it'll strip the paint off the M9? Please don't ask me WHY or tell me I don't need to - I have always done this to prevent damage and water ingress on my kit and it's helped me, plus I have a serious assignment from tomorrow and the kit's going to need all the protection it can get. Anyway - if anyone thinks it might be particularly bad on the M9, answers on a postcard. Chaaars. vv
Advertisement Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 Hi vish, Take a look here Gorilla Tape on M9 black paint?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Double Negative Posted September 22, 2010 Share #2 Posted September 22, 2010 Absolutely do not use that stuff. It's got a ridiculous grip to it. The edges fray like duct tape, but white - not black. It will look like ass from the get-go and only get worse. Finally, you'll more than likely pull paint (at least the filled-in lettering) and/or leave behind some nasty goo. If you get it on the camera skin, it will likely lift as well. If you plan to go SCUBA diving with the thing, get yourself an Ewa-Marine solution or something. Guest Overview Posted September 22, 2010 Share #3 Posted September 22, 2010 I would not use Gorilla tape if I were you. If you have to do this use a tape that isn't super sticky. I can not fathom why anyone would tape up any camera in the first place.... but, again, Gorilla tape is really sticky and, in all likelihood, will pull the paint off the camera when removed. However, the best way to break the adhesion of stickers is to heat the material with a hair dryer. Good luck..... I guess.
eleskin Posted September 23, 2010 Share #4 Posted September 23, 2010 I have used Electrical tape on my M4-2, M6, and now my black chrome M8 with no problems. My cameras have been to third world tough spots taped up. They still look like new after many years of tough and constant professional use. Now the M9 is painted, so I do not know how the tape will interact. Chrome is easy and tape never has anything to take off. Paint may be another story. I really wish they would have chromed the M9! Hey , that new Fuji X100 is chromed! And $1,000 USD! Why cant Leica chrome the M9 and charge the same as for the painted version? PS: STAY AWAY FROM THE GORILLA TAPE! IT'S NAME IS WHAT IT IS! GORILLAS AND M9's DON'T GO TOGETHER! THAT TAPE IS A B$H TO GET OFF> I HAD SOME ON MY SKIN! OOOOOUUUUUCHHHH!! IMAGINE YOUR POOR M9!
250swb Posted September 23, 2010 Share #5 Posted September 23, 2010 I've never come across a black paint camera where any type of tape has pulled the paint off. This is just paranoia. But some tapes are better than others regarding glue becoming gooey and squeezing out the edges. My black paint MP has had patches of tape of one sort or another on the corners of its body as home made strap lug protectors since day one of ownership, thats seven years without a problem and using the camera in all conditions. And the paint of the MP is considerably more delicate than the M9. But I agree it could pull the white lettering out of the engravings. To remove glue residue use a drop of naphtha or white spirit on a cloth. Steve
ceflynn Posted September 23, 2010 Share #6 Posted September 23, 2010 Gorilla Tape has two to three times the amount of adhesive of regular duct tape: Gorilla Tape - FAQs
250swb Posted September 23, 2010 Share #7 Posted September 23, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Gorilla Tape has two to three times the amount of adhesive of regular duct tape: Gorilla Tape - FAQs Which probably means its not a good idea for a smooth camera body. As only the amount of glue touching the body is relevant (because the rest isn't doing anything and is wasted) its obviously a tape that is used to take up surface imperfections over rough surfaces. Juseno Posted September 23, 2010 Share #8 Posted September 23, 2010 Well... I put just a small piece of black gaffer tape on my "M9" and when I got nervous and checked... I found that I now have a Black "9" sans M. It kind of looks cool but I'm not thrilled. So might not be worth it for you?
