strange advertisements

What are they for?

They are probably google-driven ads, which pick up on words and phrases on the page, and on your own web-browsing history and google searches.

I keep getting ads for a company from whom I bought an oak wardrobe recently.

I keep getting a movie of a very fat woman being ejected from a mechanical bucking bronco, it consumes bandwidth. Appears at the top right of the forum's home page. Haven't clicked on it to see where it leads to. I've repeatedly cleared cookies but it randomly appears when I visit the forum.

The bronco video has appeared again tonight, Firefox as well as IE7. The url for the video is: Fat Girl Faceplants Off a Mechanical Bull I've saved the L Camera Forum page source script but can't find a link to the video source which is streamed and doesn't appear in the IE cache. I suspect it's called by a script from one of the advertisers and their system has been compromised.

Hello Everybody,

I've been getting the same ad Shootist in Post #13 has for a number of weeks now.

As well as the ones delander in Post # 10 has also.

Also for a number of weeks.

Today a cartoon dating site appeared on the left side where photoraphic advertisments usually are.

It then spread to the center 1/2 of the screen left to right and top to bottom.

There has also been occasional unrelated streaming of information accross the bottom grey band above the green "start" icon for weeks.

A friend of mine who knows about computers (I don't) removed the cookie (1) he found which was for the 100,000th person. It came back less than a week later.

Best Regards,

Michael

Firstly, the serving of google ads is not completely un-controlled. As you will see above, inappropriate ads are banned by Andreas the admin. Google ads are driven, to a certain extent, by the content of the page and the user's browser history and google search history.

Secondly, rather than just deciding that terminating one's membership is the way to go, why not think about becoming a sponsoring member (where the ads are not shown) or use a browser that can have an ad-blocker plug-in, such as Firefox?
