delander † Posted September 21, 2010 Share #1 Posted September 21, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) There seem to be several very strange and dodgy looking ads on the pages at the moment, nothing to do with photography, are they intruders or there by design? Advertisement Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 Hi delander †, Take a look here strange advertisements. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted September 21, 2010 Share #2 Posted September 21, 2010 What are they for? They are probably google-driven ads, which pick up on words and phrases on the page, and on your own web-browsing history and google searches. I keep getting ads for a company from whom I bought an oak wardrobe recently.
delander † Posted September 21, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted September 21, 2010 In the last 10 minutes they seem to have gone. They were very colourful and totally out of keeping with the look of the site. One was for cheap copies of software inc PS CS4. Jeff

andybarton Posted September 21, 2010 Share #5 Posted September 21, 2010 If you can grab some URLs of the ads, and PM them to me, I will pass them on and get them blocked. All I can see from here are Robert White and Red-Dot ads - as it should be.
bill Posted September 21, 2010 Share #6 Posted September 21, 2010 There was a "no joke, you've won an iPad! Ring this number now!" and also one for weight loss. I agree - ugly and distracting. I can't show them because I have Adblocked them. Regards, Bill

gravastar Posted September 21, 2010 Share #8 Posted September 21, 2010 I keep getting a movie of a very fat woman being ejected from a mechanical bucking bronco, it consumes bandwidth. Appears at the top right of the forum's home page. Haven't clicked on it to see where it leads to. I've repeatedly cleared cookies but it randomly appears when I visit the forum. Bob. gravastar Posted September 22, 2010 Share #11 Posted September 22, 2010 The bronco video has appeared again tonight, Firefox as well as IE7. The url for the video is: Fat Girl Faceplants Off a Mechanical Bull I've saved the L Camera Forum page source script but can't find a link to the video source which is streamed and doesn't appear in the IE cache. I suspect it's called by a script from one of the advertisers and their system has been compromised. Bob. Welcome, dear visitor! therbert Posted September 23, 2010 Share #12 Posted September 23, 2010 Hair removal for me! However, nature has already removed most of my hair, at least from the top of my head.
Shootist Posted September 23, 2010 Share #13 Posted September 23, 2010 I keep getting one that says, over my speakers, You've Won, (you are the 100,000 visitor to this site) and I've been getting it for DAYS. I actually clicked on it once but then exited out. Very annoying.
LUF Admin Posted September 23, 2010 Share #14 Posted September 23, 2010 Sorry for that! These are Google ads I have only a limited influence on. Please try to find out the URL they link to, send it to me and I'll ban them immediately. Best regards from Bonn Andreas

wildlightphoto Posted September 25, 2010 Share #16 Posted September 25, 2010 I would be very happy if the "interactive advertisements" were banished. I don't appreciate audio suddenly coming on (along with the video's bandwidth consumption).

Michael Geschlecht Posted September 25, 2010 Share #18 Posted September 25, 2010 Hello Everybody, I've been getting the same ad Shootist in Post #13 has for a number of weeks now. As well as the ones delander in Post # 10 has also. Also for a number of weeks. Today a cartoon dating site appeared on the left side where photoraphic advertisments usually are. It then spread to the center 1/2 of the screen left to right and top to bottom. There has also been occasional unrelated streaming of information accross the bottom grey band above the green "start" icon for weeks. A friend of mine who knows about computers (I don't) removed the cookie (1) he found which was for the 100,000th person. It came back less than a week later. Best Regards, Michael
newtoleica Posted September 27, 2010 Share #19 Posted September 27, 2010 There is a significant problem with this site. Completely uncontrolled serving of adverts. Completely unrelated to the Leica Forum. I'm seriously thinking of terminating my membership.
andybarton Posted September 28, 2010 Share #20 Posted September 28, 2010 Firstly, the serving of google ads is not completely un-controlled. As you will see above, inappropriate ads are banned by Andreas the admin. Google ads are driven, to a certain extent, by the content of the page and the user's browser history and google search history. Secondly, rather than just deciding that terminating one's membership is the way to go, why not think about becoming a sponsoring member (where the ads are not shown) or use a browser that can have an ad-blocker plug-in, such as Firefox?
