Adarsha Posted September 21, 2010 Share #1 Â Posted September 21, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Visiting London and the major photographic galleries from tomorrow. Does anyone know of a Leica Photographic Gallery in central London, or one that showcases predominantly Leica photographers? Â I'm already planning on going to The Atlas Gallery, The Tate Modern, The AOP Gallery, any other suggestions welcome? Â Thank you
Advertisement Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 Hi Adarsha, Take a look here Is there a Leica Gallery in London, showcasing photographs taken with Leica cameras?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted September 21, 2010 Share #2 Â Posted September 21, 2010 No, but the Photographers' Gallery just behind the Palladium is worth a visit.
earleygallery Posted September 21, 2010 Share #3 Â Posted September 21, 2010 No, but the Photographers' Gallery just behind the Palladium is worth a visit. Â But it's closed now for refurbishment Andy. Â I suggest buying a copy of Time Out for a list of all current exhibitions (or visit their website). Â Hamiltons Gallery near the Mayfair store often have interesting photography exhibitions.
Adarsha Posted September 21, 2010 Author Share #4 Â Posted September 21, 2010 No, but the Photographers' Gallery just behind the Palladium is worth a visit. Â Thanks Andy, I've been there it's one of my favourites. It's closed for a refurb now though, open again next year. Did you see the Sally Mann exhibition they had there it still haunts me, brilliant stuff.
Adarsha Posted September 21, 2010 Author Share #5 Â Posted September 21, 2010 Oops I should have read your post before repyling to Andy, James. Â I'll look for Hamiltons Gallery and check out Time Out, thank you. Â Oh I've also been to Camille Silvie's exhibition in The National Gallery ... that was interesting but very historical, very old photographs. Went to the V&A last time I was in London in July too. Adarsha Posted September 21, 2010 Author Share #6 Â Posted September 21, 2010 Clearly, there is a gap in the market then, if there is no specific gallery and so many dedicated Leica users. Â Anyone rich enough to set one up? There's a business opportunity here.
andybarton Posted September 21, 2010 Share #7  Posted September 21, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I did see the Sally Man stuff - there was an excellent TV programme about that site a few years ago too.  The National Portrait Gallery often has photographic exhibitions.  And, no, I don't have the money to set up a Leica-specific gallery in the west end. There's one in my dining room, though. There is a £5 entry fee, but you will be offered a cup of tea.
stunsworth Posted September 21, 2010 Share #8  Posted September 21, 2010 Clearly, there is a gap in the market then, if there is no specific gallery and so many dedicated Leica users  I think most people are probably interested in photographs, and the equipment to take them is secondary. Personally, if I like the photographs I'm not bothered what camera was used.

I looked at your website by the way, you have taken some totally stunning photographs. There would be a market for them for sure.  @ stunsworth: I agree a good photograph is a good photograph regardless of the piece of kit used to take it. But, there is a gap in the market I reckon for a Leica gallery. Just think how wonderful it would be, all that history.. all the current stuff. It would be amazing! stunsworth Posted September 21, 2010 Share #10 Â Posted September 21, 2010 I've not been to the Mayfair shop, do they have any photographs on display there? I assume they do, but doubt that there are enough to warrant a visit just to see them.
andybarton Posted September 21, 2010 Share #11 Â Posted September 21, 2010 Hi Andy, lucky to have so many Leica photographs in your dining room. Â Well, there's only 3 in the dining room, but more in other rooms in the house - including the smallest

I recollect mostly lots of lovely glass cabinets filled with goodies, and a screen to showcase the photographs and different lens applications. Very nice. Â Gosh, I wish I had the money to set up a Leica gallery/museum.. it would be an amazing place to visit. Someone must do it sometime in the future, surely? Also the Tate Modern to see 'Exposed, Voyeurism, Surveillance and the Camera", they also have some Brassai, Bresson, Robert Frank and Man Ray. norbertnl Posted September 21, 2010 Share #17 Â Posted September 21, 2010 Hi Adarsha, Â The 'Exposed etc.' exhibition at Tate modern is indeed worth a visit. Unfortunately, Wolfgang Tillmans at Serpentine Gallery ended last Sunday :-( Another recommendation: Portraits by Jason Bell at the National Portrait Gallery. They're images from his project 'An Englishman in New York'. Technically they mostly look like medium format. At Saatchi Gallery I saw Mario Testino's Kate Moss, but I'm afraid that one's ended as well. If you have a bit more time, treat yourself to a National Art Library card (at the Victoria & Albert) and go to the Prints & Drawings Study Room. In their archive they have stored a large collection of Bill Brandt's vintage prints. Two weeks ago I went there to study a selection of portraits, landscape and nudes: absolutely worth the time and effort! Â Have a good time in London, best, Norbert
Xmas Posted September 21, 2010 Share #18 Â Posted September 21, 2010 Ivor & Elaine of Red Dot wont mind me saying - have a few physical shots and an animated LCD display. They also do have more interesting showcases of physical things than the boutique and will do free coffee. Â Noel
microview Posted September 21, 2010 Share #19  Posted September 21, 2010 Hi Adarsha,  Unfortunately, Wolfgang Tillmans at Serpentine Gallery ended last Sunday  You didn't miss much, in my opinion. However if you're bringing your camera, Jean Nouvel's Pavilion is surely worth seeing (next to the Gallery)?
Adarsha Posted September 22, 2010 Author Share #20 Â Posted September 22, 2010 Thanks to all of you for your comments, I'm off very soon... Â It's very inspirational looking at other photographers' work and realising how far we've come in the last hundred years of so. Â Best regards Adarsha
