Which points to my belief that the X1 is okay the way it is right now, I am a satisfied customer. I do not see any urgent problem that needs fixed. Of course I prefer a noctilux on it, 24 MP, iso 25,000, sapphire crystal screen, size of a sony P&S but face it we just have to be realistic about expectations.

The X1 is okay for what it is today. If the fuji does better then Leica will need to come out with one that trumps it. If the fuji tanks and fails to deliver then the reality is Leica can sit back and continue to sell more X1s happily until someone comes up with something better.

I believe Leica is quietly confident, otherwise they will have to address competitors instead of selling limited edition stuff. But I stand corrected if tomorrow Leica suddenly drops the bomb at photokina with an X2 with a tri-elmar on it??!!:D

Such a shame to see the black model plastered with the same ghastly wide grained black leather as the M9. Actually I think it looks cheap and nowhere near as good as the silver finish.

(Mind you I think that about the M9 too! )

The DLux5 looks interesting but now that Fuji has a game changer out next year I'm not going to jump too quickly into another Leica purchase.

I like the look of the black version, but as usual, that's all up to ones personal preferences. Problem is, until yesterday the X1 has been the one camera I have bin saving for. Now, enter Fuji with a concept that fits my needs much better, especially with the viewfinder. Oh Leica, why is there nothing like a digital CL or something showing up for us one income / many kids people, that love the feeling and quality of Leica, but have to stick to M2 and similar just because "new" and "digital" is equivalent to "sell your house" or "win the lottery"?

Time will tell, next year will be my X1 or X100 - year, depending on who delivers better.

Well, the black X1 does address a couple of my gripes with the current X1. At least with the black version, Leica has replaced the cheap plastic skin and used real leather. This is a minor cost differential but the feel of the camera in ones hand will be much improved. Also, with the black X1, the dials are now the same color as the body. I don't like how the current X1 has two different powder coated colors for the body and dials. It seems a little cheap and not well thought out. With that said, I personally don't like all black cameras. I like the metal to show that it is metal, and not covered in paint. The prototype X1 that we have been talking about here, from time to time, still sets the standard. I would love to see a metal lens barrel. Get rid of the plastic.

I was reading in the BJP review the other day that the barrel is made of aluminium.

Quote...

"the fixed Elmarit 24mm f/2.8 ASPH lens is mounted firmly in a telescoping aluminium barrel"

Looking at the Leica X1 - British Journal of Photography

Have to admit that I'd also thought it was plastic.

i think the outside ring is plastic and the barrel which telescopes is aluminium

David, I think you're mistaken. When I unscrew that barrel cover (that exposes the thread on the lens), it most certainly does not sound like plastic. It actually sounds like metal on metal when unscrewing. I'm pretty certain it's aluminum.

Is anyone able to verify this urban myth that it's all plastic?

ps: Others clearly feel it's metal too...

Unscrew the metal ring around the lens.

then i was lucky that leica sold the silver version first because i always loved the silver version on leica cameras, well on all cameras, looks much better, more elegant. If Leica introduced the silver version now and started with the black i would be seriously angry now :p
