mgc2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Share #1 Posted September 15, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi I've just successfully coded my Nokton 35mm f2 using some tippex and a black marker. Not sure what difference it makes other than showing the focal length in the exif data. I'd now like to "do" my summicron 50mm f2 but there are different 6-bit codes for the (III) and the (IV & V). can anyone tell from this picture which I have please? wstotler Posted September 15, 2010 Share #2 Posted September 15, 2010 can anyone tell from this picture which I have please? Based on serial number, it's from 1984: LeicaLenses serial number and production year - Leica Objektiv Serienummer Which would make it "Version 4": Leica 50mm Summicron Lens Cheers! efix Posted September 15, 2010 Share #3 Posted September 15, 2010 Hi I've just successfully coded my Nokton 35mm f2 using some tippex and a black marker. Not sure what difference it makes other than showing the focal length in the exif data. Difference: Corrections automatically applied (mostly vignetting and cyan corners with wide angles). That Tippex way sounds interesting - what do you estimate how durable it'll be?
lct Posted September 15, 2010 Share #4 Posted September 15, 2010 Yours is indeed a Summicron-M 50/2, order # 11819, from 1984.
bocaburger Posted September 15, 2010 Share #5 Posted September 15, 2010 Except to have the lens identified in EXIF, coding that 50 is unnecessary, even on the M9. I have the same lens, shot it to a blank wall uncoded and with the manual coding set, and there was absolutely no difference. I wager if you sharpie-marker-code it on the M8 you'll see likewise. mgc2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted September 15, 2010 Thanks All for the information regarding the serial number and date for my lens. As for the tippex durability - I imagine it will last a fair while because it's in the recess which runs around the flange face and is therefore not subject to any wear as the lens is being mounted or removed. The summicron is a different kettle of fish as the flange is flush. I think I'll try it anyway and see just how long it lasts. Regards Colin

If it wears or is abraded in any way, it will create dust that could then find its way into the camera and onto the sensor. Cleaning my own sensor creates heart stopping moments, so I don't want to be cleaning yours, mate. Cheers Mike
mgc2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted September 15, 2010 Ha ha, I'll just have to leave the 35 in place then to reduce the risk! Coding the 'cron 50mm didn't work somehow Colin
