JanCderidder Posted September 13, 2010 Share #1 Â Posted September 13, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) As for brand snobbery ... heres my take; I have had some problems with my M4, M6, M8 as well as with some Leica lenses, some problems were within guarantee periods other were not. I always sent them to Leica and the end result was always very satisfactory, the problems was always solved, the products were cleaned and adjusted, the end result was above expectation, always. If costs would occur I got an estimate and upon acceptance the product was always delivered as new... no questions asked. Â This is one of the reasons I buy Leica stuff, it's good and if it isn't it will be adjusted to good. Ever try sending something back to Sony ... or equivalent suppliers of electronic equipment? jhluxton Posted September 13, 2010 Share #2 Â Posted September 13, 2010 This is one of the reasons I buy Leica stuff, it's good and if it isn't it will be adjusted to good. Ever try sending something back to Sony ... or equivalent suppliers of electronic equipment? Â I have not had much dealing with Leica servicing but 18 months or so ago the rubber hinge on one of lens caps for my Ultravid binocs tore. I phoned up Leica UK expecting to have to pay for a replacement. Â They took my name and address and a few days later a padded bag appeared with two new lens caps - - free. Â Good service! andybarton Posted September 13, 2010 Share #5 Â Posted September 13, 2010 Ditto with Panasonic. The whole lens of my LC5 failed out of warranty, and it was replaced without question, free of charge. Good customer service isn't restricted to a particular continent. Â The rubber cap hinge of my wife's Ultravids has failed this week. Given that they are less than 3 years old, I expect no less of Leica UK when we return home next week. Â Â Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
barjohn Posted September 13, 2010 Share #6 Â Posted September 13, 2010 I didn't like the way my Sony 15-55mm NEX lens was soft and they replaced it without a problem right at a Sony Style store even though I didn't buy it there. I didn't have to wait or send emails and make calls like I did with my M8 when it had a problem.

Well, in the UK, if you have a problem with something under its warranty period the usual practice is to return it to the shop where you bought it from - can't say I've had problems with much of my consumer electronic goods, an new amplifier which blew my speakers but Richer sounds replaced it with an upgraded model and gave me a new pair of speakers - and that's budget stuff.  Good service isn't restricted to Leica.
ravinj Posted September 13, 2010 Share #8 Â Posted September 13, 2010 I hope I never have to find out how good or bad Leica's service is. The only time I had a problem with a camera was in 2007 when my out of warranty Nikon point and shoot developed a sensor issue. Nikon replaced the sensor, cleaned the lens and sent it back to me in 4 days. All free of charge.

jsrockit Posted September 14, 2010 Share #11 Â Posted September 14, 2010 Leica NJ is a pain in the arse to deal with... it takes months for a repair. That's really unexceptable.
pico Posted September 14, 2010 Share #12 Â Posted September 14, 2010 [...] This is one of the reasons I buy Leica stuff, it's good and if it isn't it will be adjusted to good. Ever try sending something back to Sony ... or equivalent suppliers of electronic equipment? Â Yes, I have and with excellent results, however it was for high-end digital video hardware which was in the expensive realm of Leica's products. Generally, the more expensive the hardware and the more likely it is to be used professionally, then the response has been similar to what you describe. Â Regardless, the prosumer digital video used in the field is not expected to last more than three years without work, upgrades, or replacement - while our traditional Leicas last almost a lifetime. With digital I fear (but do not know) that that era is passing away. Â Heh. I'm looking at the first Canon XL-1 right now. It's gaffer-taped together and in dire need of repair. So it sits, and has been sitting for years while the new Panasonic aquires its new dents and gaffer-tape. Â ...and six Leica M4's are still working just fine... Guest badbob Posted September 15, 2010 Share #13 Â Posted September 15, 2010 Leica NJ is a pain in the arse to deal with... it takes months for a repair. That's really unexceptable. Â This proves one important point - all those praises you see here for Leica or Sony(gasp!) were incidental things not available to most people. When you have to send the item to the service center, Leica NJ is like the Shirk Brothers construction company of NY - unionized and not working this week (or most weeks). Don't even ask about Sony service, since I had to ship my electronics from Irvine California to some fly-by-night "Sony repair" in Florida. That's the reality of Sony and Leica. And Irvine is practically the HQ of the electronics biz in SoCal.
jsrockit Posted September 15, 2010 Share #14 Â Posted September 15, 2010 My only complaint with Leica is about time for repair. Outside of that, they cut me a break on repair costs and service costs which they didn't have to.

Granted, I do agree that my Leica and Hasselblad gear is better built, in general.
