And the emerging markets in China and India are making the switch to digital - it may have a huge impact.

Again I think this 'switch' has already happened. I recall an article in the press some time ago (sorry I don't have a copy or link) which mentioned the significant sales of digital compact cameras in India, I would think it fair to assume that China is probably further ahead given the demographics and fact that many of the products are made there.

In any case, mobile phone cameras are replacing the typical cheap consumer cameras for 'happy snappers', just as facebook and the like are replacing the traditional photo album.

I did find this http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/46117/20100825/canon-canon-india-alok-bharadwaj-digital-cameras-dslr-slr.htm

Ah and this from 2003! http://www.dpreview.com/news/0311/03111901infotrends53mil.asp

<snip>

It does not satisfy your soul.

That's an extremely important point in at least two ways. First, amateur photographers take photographs precisely in order to satisfy their souls, and - as long as they have the spondulicks - choose their gear for the same reason. Pros have to satisfy their clients first; their souls hopefully get second bite.

Second: it seems you know what satisfies Alan's soul better than he does. That way madness lies.

...Now fly from Lydd Airport, in Kent.

I've flown from many small airports and I know just what you mean. But Changi vs Lydd is a better analogy than you imagined. From Changi one can get to just about anywhere, with maybe one or two changes. From Lydd - well, according to the website the next scheduled flight is on 4 December and it's to Le Touquet. According to the Le Touquet airport website, there are onward services to ... Lydd. So Lydd like film may satisfy the soul - but it's more of a niche product than anyone here expects film ever to become.

BTW, far the best airport food I ever had was at Toulouse. Tucked away behind the main restaurant there is or was a serious eatery. Food and wine were so good that I lost track of time and had to trot digestifly to the gate before Easyjet went without me.

strange way of reasoning

alan g just asked what makes film different from digital.

i think he understands now better as I can read his edited post #444

What I found is that misunderstandings come up when some keep telling as if it only existed pros who only earn money by photography. When all know what was changed, but there is still people who yell "now come the change, you''d be warned about it" .. lol

talk about its little world one is living himself in and imaging things as they didnt exist. Like Don Quijote who rides around to save world.

Bill,

Now I have to justify the restaurants I go to?

Did it ever occur to you that my soul was tired from the work involved in shooting film and prefers the ease of shooting digital? Yes you seem to have higher sensibilities than I have and surely that is reflected in everything you do, the food you eat, the car you drive, the women you know, the music you listen to and the ideas you think about. I can't compete with that as you obviously are far superior than I am in every way especially your refined taste. Please just let me get along in my desperate excuse for existence without making me feel soulless too.

So you still haven't looked at my photos and know where I'm coming from? I've been on the journey you refer to for a very long time. I don't need to keep going down the same path over and over again.

You can satisfy your soul all you want but if you don't have the chops, your pictures will still suck.

I take satisfaction that I'm in good company as McCurry, Harvey and just about everyone at National Geographic are now soulless too.

My point exactly. Or, to put it another way, I have to use a Sony Vaio - an Underwood just wouldn't cut it with my customers. I understand that entirely, so let's just leave the pro - or "work" - requirement as a given.

Second: it seems you know what satisfies Alan's soul better than he does. That way madness lies.

I would not presume... Let me more correctly say it does not satisfy a person's soul.

Again, the analogy is a good one. If I want a Swiss Army Knife or a Canon DSLR of an airport I would go to Heathrow, or Gatwick or the like. When you fly from Lydd to Le Touquet it is because you want to go to Le Touquet. There are cheaper ways to get there - ferry for example - but it is not half so much fun.

I have flown back on a Sunday evening, my only hand baggage an overnight bag, some foie gras and a half case of Palmer champagne (of course :D) and as luck would have it we were the only people on the flight. It took off when we were ready, waffled across the Channel for 15 minutes at 1500 feet, and landed before we were due to take off. As the pilot himself said, you don't get that with British Airways...

Regards,

Bill

Like Bill, I enjoy using a mechanical camera. I enjoy putting film in, taking it out, trying different films etc. I, too, enjoy the journey. There's a bit of wonder in it for me. It's a bit more interesting than hooking the D700 up to the laptop. It's this journey that many people enjoy. Using film allows access to all those camera bodies of old that we all cherished in former years. Many of us like photography as a hobby and, as Andy says, the future lies in people like Bill, me and thousands of others on Flickr buying up those used bargains and having some fun. For me, the hybrid process is more magical. I rather enjoy the inadequacies of film, but the inadequacies of digital bug the hell out of me. I can accept light leakage and scratches and water marks as part of the whole, but moire or sensor bloom are unforgivable to me. It's all a state of mind.

It means that just because you get a lot of pleasure from taking photographs does not make them better than mine. (And I do get a lot of pleasure out of it.)

Why don't you try earning your living as a photographer for the next 10 years or so and then get back to me.

Hi

The answer to the OP is:- as well as a film M you need an enlarger.

Patterson has just introduced a new one but an old Leitz one is nicer.

I'd suggest we could do with another forum for insulting one another as well.

Jolly good for you. I never said you didn't, nor that I was a better photographer than you. This isn't a playground, and I neither know nor care if my dad is bigger than yours.

Why don't you try earning your living as a photographer for the next 10 years or so and then get back to me.

Why don't you try to make your point without being insulting? Good grief, If it stresses you out this much, why choose it as a way to make a living?

Bill

[...] And the Amish are still using horses instead of tractors. I'm sure there are some benefits to this for them too but it won't make me sell my John Deere stock.

LOL! The Amish population is, in fact, increasing! It's a threat to John Deere!

Maybe we should put this thread to the Bar with a new subject line: The Future of Horse Drawn Plows... and film.

Alan, please could you stop fine-tuning your posts after they have been responded to? It makes it very hard to keep track of which of your points warrants an answer. Perhaps you could think first about what you are going to say, then just say it?

There - I have edited this post so that you can see what I mean...

Many thanks,

Bill
