Well the thread title pretty much sums it up. I am saving up to replace my 50 cron with the new 50 summilux asph.

So far, Ive only bought chrome lenses because I think they feel better.

My problem is that I cannot, for my best efforts find the ACTUAL weight of this lens in chrome!

The official leica papers states a weight of "approx 335 g". But as I know silver lenses are always heavier there is no statement as to the weight of the chrome version.

Side question: is the chrome version discontinued, now that leica decided to skip chrome on the M9? I will not be buying a "steel grey painted" lens.

I have searched this forum and there seems to be a LOT of writing on this lens, but so far I have not found any threads that specify the actual weight of this piece.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can enlighten me :-)

The general weight penalty for the chrome lenses is 30%-40% more (the 35 'lux ASPH takes a 66% jump!). So if you don't get a more precise answer, you can figure about 450g.

The extra weight is not the chrome per se, of course. It is the extra weight of the brass substituted for aluminum in the chromed parts.

"Discontinued" is an elastic word regarding Leica stuff (and touchy - see recent film bodies hoo-rah). But if it is discontinued, it is likely more due to most of the chrome versions being dropped as not cost-effective over the past few years, not due to the elimination of chrome from the M9 finish directly (which may also have its own cost component).

I've just weighed mine on the analog kitchen scales at approximately 460 grams.

One thing to bear in mind is it tends to make the camera somewhat front heavy when carrying it around the neck or shoulder on a strap.

lct and gravastar are probably both right - I've noticed in weighing lenses that the official Leica weight seems to include one or both lens caps, and that the lens weighed alone is therefore usually anywhere from 5-10g less than published.
