Bert N Posted August 16, 2010 Share #1 Â Posted August 16, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) This image was shot with the 50mm f/2.5 and the M8 under bright sunlight. I find the highlighted edges of the leaves very odd, but I'm not sure what causes such artifacts, other than how the camera treats transitions between bright and dark regions. Advertisement Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 Hi Bert N, Take a look here Odd highlighted edges. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted August 16, 2010 Share #2 Â Posted August 16, 2010 Apart from the occasional purple edge, I would look to Mother Nature for this. Obviously the edges of the leaves are more translucent than the body, causing them to blow out under the light falling through them. Quite a pleasing effect , though. Ecar Posted August 16, 2010 Share #3 Â Posted August 16, 2010 Agree with Jaap. Given the strong contrast shooting conditions and the texture of the leaves, the result doesn't look odd to me...
PasMichiel Posted August 16, 2010 Share #4 Â Posted August 16, 2010 I had it too. But the DNG did not. With a better conversion with PhotoShop it was gone.

farnz Posted August 17, 2010 Share #6 Â Posted August 17, 2010 It looks overexposed to me, probably because the M8 has metered off the berries and darker foliage in the centre. Â I agree with Jaap that it's quite a pleasant effect. Â Pete.
Bert N Posted August 17, 2010 Author Share #7 Â Posted August 17, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thank you all for your comments. To convince myself that this is not some quirks with the M8's handling of backlit objects, I shot the same subject with another camera, a GH-1 and the results are similar, this was shot later in the day so the sunlight is not as bright as before. Bert N Posted August 17, 2010 Author Share #8 Â Posted August 17, 2010 It does appear that the GH-1 jpg handling of backlit edges is a bit cleaner than the M8's - the dark contour at the edges of the bright edges are not present in the GH-1 image but they are evident in the M8 shot. Shooting raw apparently minimizes this (minor) issue.
jaapv Posted August 17, 2010 Share #9 Â Posted August 17, 2010 Not quite. On the M8 shot you have blown out your highlights, on the GH1 the exposure is better and they have been preserved. RAW converters handle highlights differently as well.
