Leicabatoutahell Posted August 5, 2010 Share #1 Posted August 5, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Picked up an X1 the other day, this is my report: The camera is right out of the 1990’s. Leica and other vocal fans refer to the controls as simplified to just the basics…well guess what, this is a complicated electronic device, what works for a film camera in the last century is not enough. So much is menu driven that it’s just tiring to do any more than point and shoot. The options that are there are limited also…Do you know you can’t record a raw file unless you record a jpeg along with it? Slow, the one word that dominates any description of this camera. The focusing takes twice as long as a 200 dollar point and shoot let alone the GF1 which embarrasses it. But slow also applies to the rest of the camera. Leica really went low class on the processing power…image review, ha! It takes a full 5 seconds just for the image to appear and heaven can wait if you decide to enlarge it because it takes more time to get back to regular size and advance to the next image – this camera will put you to sleep! sveinp Posted August 5, 2010 Share #2 Posted August 5, 2010 ...here we go again... Why just buy a $200 point-and-shoot "thing" and leave us that want high IQ alone?!
Leicabatoutahell Posted August 5, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted August 5, 2010 ...here we go again... Why just buy a $200 point-and-shoot "thing" and leave us that want high IQ alone?! You have 6 posts, what do you mean "here we go again"? lol So what, you are not the forum censor..you can just move on to another thread if it disturbs you to hear the truth, people should be aware rather than just be fed the company line... Lots of people want high IQ but if you can't get through the camera's functioning it really doesn't matter.

Leicabatoutahell Posted August 5, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted August 5, 2010 While I'm here let me add a couple things to my report. LCD screen made of the softest plastic known to man and with a god aweful blue tint to it just to add insult to injury. I guess the company that prides itself as being the best of the best hasn't heard of hardened glass..oh wait they used it on the M8 but for some reason didn't think the M9 was worthy. Minimum focusing distance, 3 feet! lol again.
davidhunternyc Posted August 5, 2010 Share #6 Posted August 5, 2010 Oh, I know what is going to happen here. All the X1 supporters (and I'm one of them) are going to call you a hater and a troll. This post of mine is to encourage those people to use restraint and let your message stand as is. Your thoughts and feelings about the X1 are just as valid and important as anyone else's. Besides, yes, I too wish the X1 screen were made from glass.

Not wanting to start a fight or feed a troll, but everything you mention was apparent before you 'purchased it'. If you didn't like the features why did you spend $2000? FYI, my wife's $200 panasonic (with leica lens) has more menus than my x1. On my x1 my shutter speed controls and aperture settings are not in a menu, and I find then manual focus actually gets me to about a foot from the subject. Once again, remind me why you spent $2000 on this 1990's camera?

anupmc Posted August 5, 2010 Share #11 Posted August 5, 2010 Steve, perhaps you can enlighten us which sub $2,000 camera in your opinion is better than the X1 then? And what features specifically make it so? At least then perhaps we can have a reference point to have a more constructive discussion. Very cute reply but the point of my post was to point out the massive shortcomings of this camera. Perhaps you should enlighten us as to which of the points I have made are untrue? Can you show me a sub 2000 dollar camera that is slower focusing than the X1? Can you show me a sub 2000 dollar camera that doesn't have a faster processor than the X1? Can you show me a sub 2000 dollar camera that ...well you get the point. Then maybe we can get an idea where you think the X1's competition lies. All these issues were known and all over the internet long before I decided to purchase one, as was the fact of the great IQ ... I purchased mine expecting what to find and what not to find and personally I was pleasantly surprised. Would I have bought the X1 without doing any research into the camera spending 1500€ along the way, I still wouldn't blame Leica only kick myself in the balls for being an ignorant and stupid little pr*ck. Do you understand why the AF is slower than a smaller sensor P&S type camera such as the ones you mention? I suggest you read the numerous threads here for a more informed position. Also the controls are all there AFAIK, just that aperture and shutter speeds are 'old skool' dials. I'm no fanboy, I don't own one, but it is what it is, and you should understand the pros and cons of a camera before buying it IMHO.
a.j.z Posted August 5, 2010 Share #16 Posted August 5, 2010 I do not have a X1 and I am therefore neutral on the subject but would like to make a general comment: What I dislike about this forum (there are many good things here, too) is that as soon as somebody utters some sort of criticism regarding Leica-equipment the discussion immediately gets very hostile (even if the criticism is not). This of course happens also in most other brand-related forums but I had thought that Leica-users would be more tolerant.

Leicabatoutahell Posted August 5, 2010 Author Share #18 Posted August 5, 2010 I think you just proved my point-troll Yep, when you can't debate the issue on its own merits go for the ad homenium attack right? fotografr Posted August 5, 2010 Share #19 Posted August 5, 2010 Some people pick up a camera and immediately begin looking for shortcomings. Others pick up a camera and immediately take advantage of its strengths. I accept that the X1 has slow autofocus, but I can't recall missing a single shot because of it. I've also not missed a single shot because of the controls. Being a longtime Leica user, I like them and where they are placed. So it shoots a jpeg with the DNG. So what? When I bought my X1, I knew exactly what I was getting and I have no regrets whatsoever. Buying one without knowing the pros and cons in advance is sheer ignorance.
