New M9 at Croydon Photo Centre

A dealer that I can highly recommend.

Mark

I second Mark's endorsement. It is a traditional camera shop that I have been using for a number of years and I bought my M9 there last December. The owner, Reg Roach, has been a Leica dealer since the 80s and what he does not know about the cameras was probably not worth knowing in the first place. :)

They had a Black M9 in stock - for sale - shortly after the release date, I did post a message here but one of the MODS removed it.

My father bought much of his gear from this shop going back to the late 60's, they've always been in the same place. I still have his Retina lllc and B&O receiver bought from there.

The website only lists a fraction of the stuff they actually stock too - bit chaotic to be honest, you need to call or visit if there's something you want. I have told Reg about the forum.

It's just down beyond Lwr Addiscombe Rd isn't it? Used to live in Beckenham and often visited there. There were treasure troves of s/h equipment. Glad to hear it is still going. Will try and call in next time I'm back in Beckenham.

No, it's on the Brighton Road going towards Coombe Road just after the overpass, Bob.

I've dealt with Reg too and he's a true gentleman.

Another one wrong. I know where you mean but can't picture the shop. It's a long time since I've been down there but it gives me two places to look out for.

The actual address is:

294 High Street Croydon Surrey CR0 1NG

You can look it up on Google Maps and Street View. The shop is difficult mistake these days as it has been painted Leica dot red since the Street View camera went along there. ;)

Mike,

It's still the High Street there is it? I'd always thought it'd become the Brighton Road by then. You live and you learn. ;)

Pete.

Hi Pete

I took the address directly from the website, but you are sort of correct as the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run route goes straight past the shop. :)

Not that you would go that way to Brighton normally - as you know the vintage cars drive through the Whitgift Centre pedestrian precinct and then onto the High Street.

Out of interest Reg has been running the shop since 1959 so now in his 51st year selling Leica gear.

Is this a record for the longest active Leica dealer?

Regards

Kevin

Hi Kevin

Reg has not been a Leica dealer for all the time he has run the shop. He originally started off selling radios and then TVs, incorporating photography into the existing business in the early 80s. It was at that point he became involved with Leica. Nevertheless, it is still a long period of association.

There is a history of the business on the website, which Reg also sent to his regular customers last Xmas.

My father knew Reg - when we lived in Thornton Heath. My mother used to dread going in to Croydon shopping as Dad would always steer us to the shop and then he and Reg would talk radio for hours. Dad was a radio ham (G2BFC) and worked for Mullards designing valves and the early PCB's.

I always remember the smell of the shop and the background 'hum'. I still have a 'Grundig Boy' that was bought from Reg.

Yes, it is easy to lose track of time when with Reg! And he still has a bunch of people who call in there regularly.
