The second draft of the book is available for download. This includes higher res pix in a few cases, and substitution of lower-grain shots for some. Go here (remember it's a big download):

bretteville.com | Many Eyes, One Camera 2011

Please check pictures that you were worried about.

I am working on the Appendix (where have you heard that before?).

Regards to all,

If you use the same link, above, you will be able TO DOWNLOAD THIS BOOK FULL OF BEAUTIFUL PICTURES. Sorry, got excited there.

Thanks to Carl, who not only hosted the download but also posted directions that even I can understand. Again, the download takes a while.

Please go thru the book to make sure your pictures are there, that they look ok, and that your info in the Appendix is correct. In some cases, there are not names for the pic. I may also have lost details that you wish to have appear (or perhaps included something you do not wish to have appear).

I have tried to keep straight whose email addresses and/or website url's should be in or out of the book. Please advise me accordingly.

Then, it goes up to Blurb.

Hot damn!

Did I say these are beautiful pix? This is a wonderful work of art.

Regards to all,

I got a bunch of comments about the Appendix. The corrections are made and I'll post again after the weekend.

In preparation of the next draft, I will try to add more page numbers. My plan is to number the left-hand page, at lower left, in gray (if I can), for pages that end in 2 or 8 (that is, 2 of every 5 pages). Please comment.

I like the book with just pictures showing, but it's a community effort in the form of a Greek democracy of old. Speak up!

Yep! Discreet numbers, but very annoying without them. Our local paper has 'random' page number ID and it makes me fume when I am referred to p9 and it, and surrounding pages, have no numbers. Physically counting pages makes me want to rip them out.

Apologies for rant. I'll go watch TV now. Probably another mistake!

Bill, sorry about the late indication, but I sent it via email to the wrong "Bill".

Most of my stuff has reproduced is fine. I have one small thing that may be altered. The pic on P.33, of the Russian Sailor shows him as having a flat head. I think this is because the 8"x10'' border around the image 'assumes' that the pic fills the space. BecauseI cropped the original image to be tight, it does not work well in the different proportion frame IMO.

Either can you crop the LH side tighter and enlarge, such that the image fills the vertical dimension, or do you need me to re-send a different crop of the pic?

The problem arises because of the white sky behind them. There is is no apparent top to the image when on white paper.

If all that is too picky at this stage, then just run with it as is.

The rest of the book has shaped up very well. Than you for the hard and prolonged work you have put in for the publication.

John, the image I have is the same as the one in the book. I'll be happy to change it if you send me a new file.

Best, Bill

Carl has made available a short book that shows the difference with and without numbers on the page.

If you go to the same link as in the first post on this page of the thread:

http://bretteville.com/manyeyes2011.html

and go the "special update" link, you can download this "book" very quickly. I'll send a query to Blurb to see if they have a format I haven't discovered.

Thanks,

Although I have not contributed a photograph to this book, if I may contribute something here?

I believe that numbers can be added to a Blurb page template without the need to drastically reduce the size of the printed image. I am pretty sure that a "floating" text box, or similar, can be placed to avoid having such a large margin at the bottom of the page.

I was discussing the Forum Charity Book with someone from Leica last week. He asked that, for the next one (watch this space), we include the camera and lens details on the actual page itself, rather than in an appendix. This makes it much easier to see the technical details for each photograph, without constantly having to refer to the back of the book. I agree with him.

This may be something that you have already discussed here (in which case, please accept my apologies), but it's definitely something that I will be doing when I put the next charity book together.

Andy, I am waiting for a second response from Blurb. The first told me to select one of the page formats, not particularly helpful.

I will see if I can find a way to float a text box on a picture page. Thanks.

I have had a second response from Blurb, and the only option is to put the image and the number into a new image file and use that on the page. I can see that this would give me a change to screw up the images, but if enuf people want it, how about I place a number on some even pages?

As you can see from the baby book in the download, there is a big difference in image size using the standard formats that allow numbers in comparison with full-bleed image pages.

Suggestions are welcome....
