Strange viewfinder!

Recommended Posts

There were several of these kind of devices that turned a Leica essentially into a twin lens reflex. Others were the Meyer Megoflex, the DeMornay-Budd, the Nagal Pupille, and the Septonflex.

Fine, and even at a rather good price.... interesting for it came from a Wetzlar factory :)... I think they probably have had some personal relationship with Leitz family : I seem to remember that a "young" (maybe still alive) member of the family was indeed named Ernst Kuhn-Leitz...

Besides Luigi's explanations, you might also find these links interesting:

Leitz Kuhn Flexamter

What is especially interesting about the device is how it was supposed to

be used: Set focus using the device and then manually transfer die distance

setting to your camera's lens. That of course without shaking the least bit

in order not to alter the distance.

Yes, Kuhn who manufactured this device is the Leitz relative.

At the time that wasn't at all a strange idea. Most 35mm cameras, including the first few years' production of Leicas, had no built-in rangefinder. Instead, users could buy rangefinders that they used in exactly that way. Since the typical lens was 45 to 50mm and f/2.8 or slower with a minimum focusing distance of about 90cm, extreme accuracy was not required.

I believe that the best use for an accessory like this is for taking low angle photos where it is difficult or impossible to place your eye behind the viewfinder and rangefinder eyepieces.

I bought this item and it arrived today. The viewing image is kind of dim but quite usable. There are no focusing aids, just plain ground glass. There is no parallax correction but there is a provision to level the viewfinder so that,at infinity, the camera and the finder are both looking at the same spot.

The only work it needs are a thorough cleaning and re-gluing of the leatherette, which is peeling. The original box was included but not the leather case.

I believe this was also offered in a version to fit the Contax.Unlike the Flexameter, focusing the camera lens automatically adjusted the focus of the finder.
