leicashot Posted July 5, 2010 Share #1 Posted July 5, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ok so having what could be some power issues. So far on each charge, with no power save I've only gotten around 50 images and a few hours, turning it off every now and then. If I leave the camera on, the battery will die within a few hours. I have two original batteries that have had 3 full charge and 90% discharge cycles with a long initial charge. More specifically, in standby, how long does your last without any power save? I'd say I'm getting 5 hours tops.
Advertisement Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 Hi leicashot, Take a look here M9 power issues. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
scott kirkpatrick Posted July 5, 2010 Share #2 Posted July 5, 2010 Setting some sort of timeout is important. If you force no power off, and leave the lcd lit, the M8 would drain its battery in 3-5 hours, depending on how you have charged your battery. I haven't tried the same on the M9, but would expect that it might happen even sooner. But if you set 1-2 min for the timeout, and a short review time, it should be possible to get 200-400 shots per battery charge. scott
leicashot Posted July 5, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted July 5, 2010 I had no review, and no LCD left on. if I take he battery of charge and turn camera on, it dies in a matter of hours. If I'm shooting in this way, but turning camera off after each shot, I staill achieve barely 50 shots. I owned an M8 prior and recently used a demo M9 on an assignment for 2 weeks so I'm familiar with how it should work. What I need to know is whether this is really bad for new batteries or standard until I;ve gone through more cycles cause it looks like a camera issue to me. zlatkob Posted July 5, 2010 Share #4 Posted July 5, 2010 More specifically, in standby, how long does your last without any power save? I'd say I'm getting 5 hours tops. If I understand correctly, you are not using auto power off. In other words, you have auto power off set to "never". This means the camera is always on, except when you switch it to off. 5 hours may be about right if the camera is set this way, though you should be able to make a few hundred exposures in that time. I'm not sure why you're only getting 50. To maximize battery life, I have the camera set to auto power off after 1 minute. It only takes a slight press of the shutter button to wake the camera when it's needed again. I only switch the camera's power switch to off when it's going into my bag. 250swb Posted July 5, 2010 Share #5 Posted July 5, 2010 More specifically, in standby, how long does your last without any power save? I'd say I'm getting 5 hours tops. I wouldn't set the camera up to be On all the time, but let it go to sleep every now and again. I'm guessing that the 50 shots you are getting is over that five hours, not just fifty shots on a full charge? So to see if you have a duff camera, or batteries, put in a full battery and fire away until the battery dies. If you only get fifty shots when fired in succession you have a genuine problem. If you get 400 shots you have a power management problem which is solved in the menu by setting Auto Power Off. Steve

jaapv Posted July 5, 2010 Share #7 Posted July 5, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) With the camera alive constantly, without taking any shot, I would think the charge will last about four hours maximum. Just keep the "no auto shutoff" for occasions where you need the camera instantly for a short while. I found the startup is so fast that that is virtually never. leicashot Posted July 5, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted July 5, 2010 Ok, I think in the past the M9 I used must have had the feature on, infact I'm pretty sure it did, so will give it another run through. Thanks for the help guys.
leicashot Posted July 5, 2010 Author Share #9 Posted July 5, 2010 Well over the last 40 minutes I have taken 157 images, pretty much shooting 7 images in a row in RAW in one burst. Previewed about 5 times and battery life is still on about 90%. Auto shut off was set to 1 minute. Amazing how much difference this feature makes. The way I'm going I could probably achieve well over 500 images I'm guessing. I guess I could have worked this out myself but appreciate everyone's opinions and experiences. marknorton Posted July 6, 2010 Share #10 Posted July 6, 2010 I haven't done the same test with the M9 as I did with the M8 but it's essential to have the auto power-off set to something other than "Never". Otherwise, the camera is running the whole time and the battery life will be short. Even in the M9, the 1 minute auto power off period is too long; for a Nikon D3x, it's something like 6 seconds but they have the advantage of a faster wake up time from sleep and can achieve thousands of exposures from an admittedly rather larger battery pack. I'd say I'm getting 5 hours tops. I go to couple hundreds images and the battery is down to 25%. That is if I am shooting say in one day. If I just use the camera for few shots per day, the same battery goes for a week. I have the auto-review disabled, auto power-off set at 2 min. I do some image playback but not to often. leicashot Posted July 6, 2010 Author Share #12 Posted July 6, 2010 It's amazing just how quickly the battery will die without auto shut off, faster than any camera I've ever used.
