ldhrads Posted June 29, 2010 Share #1 Posted June 29, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Stumbled into Discount Camera in San Francisco yesterday with my M8.2 in hand, they had a M9 on the shelf with no claim to it. My wife said "You want it?" I said welllllll and then walked out with it. I'm really happy because as much as I love the M8.2 I really was bit by the full frame bug. Call me impulsive, hell I bought the Nocti on impulse but now I have an amazing (more) combination. Here's the question. I"m on vacation. I picked up one 39 mm UV filter and put it on my 35 cron. My other lenses have the UV/Ir filter. Will this be a problem if I leave them on for the trip? Should I go "naked" until I get home and pick up some more filters? Thanks for any input. kkochheiser Posted June 29, 2010 Share #2 Posted June 29, 2010 I've never been a fan of using filters except for a specific effect. If you are careful and use a lens hood you will be fine going naked. The Nocti might need an ND though in the daylight! Congratulations! Kent
ldhrads Posted June 29, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted June 29, 2010 Thanks Kent, I've got the ND with me!!!
hoppyman Posted June 29, 2010 Share #4 Posted June 29, 2010 Congratulations Lawrence. Yes it would be safest to rmove the UV/IR filters in regard to possible unwanted image effects. If you like to have filters for mechanical protection as well (you have bad dreams at night involving that big Nocti front element and sand storms), maybe you should get some UV's when you next visit a good dealer. Personally I like the slim B+W models.
Shade Posted June 29, 2010 Share #5 Posted June 29, 2010 I think the UVIR filter shouldn't pose any problems if you're using it in daylight, moreso it gives a better effect since the M9 still has a thin IR sensor filter, hence it doesn't completely block out the IR effect... Sure it does block more than the M8s, but not as much as it should be. However, at night, if you're shooting towards light spots, you will see a green internal reflection caused by the filter. It would be best if you can take your filter(s) off at night to avoid this affect.
Bill W Posted June 29, 2010 Share #6 Posted June 29, 2010 I read several discussions about yes for this situation and no for this one pertaining to UV/IR filters. I solved it by selling them (6) as a package deal on ebay. Since 4 of them were free from Leica, I had very little invested in them. I bought B+W UV protection filters from B&H and came out a few $ ahead. I have always had a filter on my glass, its just me.
Bill W Posted June 29, 2010 Share #7 Posted June 29, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I guess we should have asked if you traded your 8.2 in on the 9 or just purchased the 9 outright. You will probably leave the UV/IR filters on if you are changing between the 8.2 and the 9.
sm23221 Posted June 29, 2010 Share #8 Posted June 29, 2010 I've never been a fan of filters on my Leica lenses - I'd go "naked" permanently.
Benoit Petot Posted June 29, 2010 Share #9 Posted June 29, 2010 Idrads, Luky man, keep your wife & keep your M9. I got mines 40 years & 6 months ago and I'm still in love. I'm not sure that you need to use always a filter: why buy the best lens in the world if it's to reduce their sharpness by adding 2 air/glass surfaces. I've and uv filter for each of my lens that I use when it rains, when at sea or when I'm in a crowded environment where they could be scratrched I've a handfull of ND to use the lens full open even in high lights (DoF control) I'm not using B&W or effect filters anymore (LR 3.0 is by fair more powerfull. tele_player Posted June 29, 2010 Share #10 Posted June 29, 2010 That must be the world's oldest M9 !!! Idrads, I got mines 40 years & 6 months ago and I'm still in love.
sanyasi Posted June 29, 2010 Share #11 Posted June 29, 2010 I would get a filter the first time it is convenient. All it takes is one pebble from a car. I also notice on one or two of my Leica lens that it is easy to accidentally push the hood shut. Jack Siegel
doug_m Posted June 29, 2010 Share #12 Posted June 29, 2010 I leave UV/IR filters on my 50 to 90 mm lenses as well as the 24 lux and have not had any problems. This allows me to use the M8.2 and M9 without taking filters off. Do your own tests and decide. I doubt you will ever see an issue with any 50 mm or longer lens. adli Posted June 29, 2010 Share #13 Posted June 29, 2010 I kept the UV/ir on my 90 cron until I experienced a double moon on some of my night pictures. Now I have all my lenses naked.
ldhrads Posted June 30, 2010 Author Share #14 Posted June 30, 2010 Thanks Everyone. I shot today with the UV/IR on my Noctilux and got some amazing images. I'll post in time. I"m not going to keep the M8.2 so I will eventually give up the UV/IR filters. LDH
