One might also ask "So why did the Nikon S series die?" in 1962.  That answer is easy.  Nikon needed all their resources to fill the demand for the Nikon F.

The Canon 7 continued until 1968.  Canon's worthy competitor to the Nikon F did not appear until 1971 with their F-1.
