dovla Posted June 19, 2010 Share #1 Posted June 19, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi guys, Long time reader first time poster! I finally decided to register, since i will be getting my D2 in the next few days! Very excited! Been a pentax and canon shooter for years... and i am so used to proper viewfinder that i am little scared with D2 having the electronic viewfinder! Now my question is, is there a external viewfinder for a D2 that i can buy? Any help will be much appreciated! Cheers Vlad

ASpes Posted June 19, 2010 Share #2 Posted June 19, 2010 Hi guys, Long time reader first time poster! I finally decided to register, since i will be getting my D2 in the next few days! Very excited! ... Now my question is, is there a external viewfinder for a D2 that i can buy? Any help will be much appreciated! Cheers Vlad Hi Vlad, first of all have my welcome to the forum and congrats on your D/2. As for your question, there's nothing that prevents you to mount an external viewfinder on a Digilux 2, but guess the main issue is with the zoom, how would you deal with that? Unless of course you always use it on a specific focal length. External viewfinders are either needed with a Leica rangefinder as the internal frames cannot cope with the field of view of some lenses, or could be useful with a fixed lens camera like the X1 and bring it at eye level, but with my D/2 I do not need or miss any. I'm sure you will enjoy your D/2 as it is. All the best.
dovla Posted June 19, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted June 19, 2010 Thanks for the welcome ASpes! I guess i have to wait till i get the camera and then we'll see does it suit me or not (only concerned about viewfinder). Sure the zoom is the problem but im used to the prime lenses so i would rarely zoom anyway. I was lucky enough to score this cam for a good price (400 euros) while the other day one went for 800 euros! They seem to be very rare back home in Australia so i'm little lucky that i am in Germany at the moment Cheers Vlad
farnz Posted June 19, 2010 Share #4 Posted June 19, 2010 Vlad, Welcome to the forum! Fwiw, I would take all the talk about the quality of the D2's EVF with a pinch of salt. No, it's not as clear as an optical viewfinder but it's perfectly adequate for most shooting unless your manually focussing macro shots or shooting Formula One with a high shutter speed. I've used the D2 for several years and its EVF rarely causes a problem once you get used to it. My advice would be to get used to your D2 and the superb photos it can produce before deciding to spend money on an external viewfinder. Pete. stuny Posted June 19, 2010 Share #5 Posted June 19, 2010 Vlad - Welcome aboard, and congratulations on your D2. I was an early adopter of one (March 2004) and use it as my carry everywhere camera, in my briefcase to work every day, and along on adventure travel as a back-up. Pete's advice is excellent and I encourage you to follow it. Somebody will soon advise you to look at Thorsten Overgaard's D2 site for invaluable advice -- Off hand I do not recall the URL. BTW: I bought a used Leica universal finder for the D2 (35-90 adjustable, or some such) and have never used it. Your experience may match mine. Please show us your photos and continue to ask questions. Be sure to

AlbertoDeRoma Posted June 19, 2010 Share #7 Posted June 19, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) After the initial "shock" of seeing through the D2 EVF (it's not very high-res or accurate) I've COMPLETELY adjusted to it. It does not get in my way and it feels very natural now. I would never consider and external finder for the D2 (although I am thinking about it for the D-Lux 4). daveleo Posted June 19, 2010 Share #8 Posted June 19, 2010 welcome Vlad i go along with others here . . . use the D2 viewfinder and give a chance . . . i use it 95% of the time and i don't understand why people complain about it (as long as you use autofocus, as i do because of my bad eyes). best of luck with your new camera ! LOL It's really no big deal. Sure it would be nice to have an optical viewfinder, but the images are still "money" without it. JT
cbretteville Posted June 19, 2010 Share #10 Posted June 19, 2010 I used a 28mm finder on my D2 for a while, but went back to using the EVF or even (dear i say it) the screen. I now use the 28mm finder on my IIIf or M3 when I have a 28mm lens on either. Carl
wda Posted June 19, 2010 Share #11 Posted June 19, 2010 Vlad, a warm welcome to the Leica Forum and congratulations on acquiring a D2 so late in its young life! I echo the advice given above. There are very few accessories available for the D2. If you can find one, the Elpro-D is excellent for closer photography. External viewfinder? A fixed focal length VF would be very frustrating to use. Try before you buy! Much better to get out and Shoot -Shoot -Shoot!
dovla Posted June 20, 2010 Author Share #12 Posted June 20, 2010 Thanks for the warm welcome and all replies guys! Will be definitely putting some photos once i get my hands on it! Seen quiet a few threads already in Photo forum, i think i will have some fund with D2 and leave my heavy gear at home little bit Cheers Vlad
dovla Posted June 21, 2010 Author Share #13 Posted June 21, 2010 Also guys another question i have is for the sensor failure. Now sure if it has been replaced in the one i have bought, but if it does fail (i hope not) what is the price to get it replaced these days when it goes back to Leica? And also if it has been replaced, are they failing again or...? Cheers Vlad

I have younger cameras, I have cameras with more megapixicles and longer and wider lenses, but I keep coming back to this little gem. In answer to your sensor replacement question - free. I am also unaware of a second sensor failure - maybe others can chip in on that one? Regards, Bill
farnz Posted June 21, 2010 Share #15 Posted June 21, 2010 ... I am also unaware of a second sensor failure - maybe others can chip in on that one? Regards, Bill Vlad, I've never heard of the replacement Sony sensors failing either. You can read the story and cause of the sensor failure here. Pete. dovla Posted June 22, 2010 Author Share #16 Posted June 22, 2010 Ah sweet then, i still hope it never fails tho! So in essence it doesn't matter if you are not the original owner and have no proof of purchase Leica will still service the faulty sensor? With no proof of purchase i mean that camera has been bought off ebay. I recall reading somewhere that for us back home in Australia D2's and LC1's had different sensors to cope with the heat? Anyway thanks for the comments guys! Cheers Vlad
roguewave Posted June 22, 2010 Share #17 Posted June 22, 2010 Vlad, welcome aboard. You have purchased a very fine camera. Use it well. Both the EVF & the LCD on the back are both very good options. Don't forget to calibrate the EVF to your eye. Will look forward to seeing your images. This camera is a living legend, Enjoy.
dovla Posted June 22, 2010 Author Share #18 Posted June 22, 2010 Thanks mate! I have actually just received it today, i was under the impression that it will arrive minimum tomorrow but came today.... And what a camera i must say! I have own some expensive equipment in my photography time but this is something else! The feeling is just unbelievable. I still have not make much with it, took maybe 2 photos but they're still on the cam. I know i know, but i am a fresh married man so you know what i mean Will post soon as i catch something interesting PS: and i have to say its like new, there is no single scratch on the body anywhere, and it came with original Leica UVA filter which was not mentioned in the auction, not sure if they come with it originally ? dhoun Posted November 19, 2010 Share #19 Posted November 19, 2010 I've been using my 'new' Digilux 2 for some days now. One thing that surprises me is that the EVF seems to darken considerably when used in bright outdoor conditions, making it very difficult to use. Has anyone else noticed this?
