Question about 35mm Summicron-L 8-Element?

Dear Gurus,

Recently I bought 35mm Summicron L Mount 8 Elements with Closest focusing distance engraved with 3'4" instead of 2'4" and Batch # is "16xxxxxx", it was made in Germany. It seems a lot of article only mentioning the outlook of Summicron M Mount 8-Elements, but didn't mention that of Summicron-L Mount. If you have this kind of Lens or info about that, please share with me your insight. Billion Thanks!

The Summicron 35 was indeed built in screw mount too... even if in small numbers, Wetzlar and Canada made, of the 1st 8- elem. design, and chrome (though some ultrarare black items are reported) ; total number ought to be in the 500-600 range. Very appealing for collectrors, not often offered for sale, but regularly some item appears (maybe... isn't your post related to one of the last Westlicht Auctions... ? ;))

Nothing strange the 3'4" engraving... it's about 1 meter, the standard for screw mount lenses: 2'4" is for lenses designed for the "70 cm" Rangefinders, i.e. M2-M4 and later

Actually, the 3’4” (1 m) minimum focusing distance indicates that this is a ‘real’ LTM 35mm Summicron. During the early days of this lens’ production, all were made in the LTM and an M mount adapter was semi-permanently attached.

Those, originally M mount lenses, are often found with the adapter removed and the seller describing it as an LTM lens. A tell-tale sign is that the closest focusing distance on these converted lenses is 2' 4" (0.7 m) and at the 6 o’clock point of the lens mount there will be signs of a set screw impression. This is the set screw that held the LTM to M adapter in place, when the lens left the factory as an M mount lens.

So - you have a real LTM 35mm Summicron, quite a rare lens indeed. Congratulations!

Best,

Jan
