Hi, I am Leica newbie here (so appologize ahead of time for asking something stupid)

I've been using Canons for years now, until i was bitten by a Leica bug when M8 came out.

So now that i finally got an M8 I need to start building a lens collection. My first purchase was a used 50mm f/1.4 lux (11114). Here are 2 questions i have:

- the lens came with a reversible vented hood and a lens cap. However, the lens cap only fits on top of the hood when it's sitting in a 'reversed' position... so if i'm shooting with the hood on, first i have to reverse it and then put the cap on in order to put the camera away... and if i dont use the hood -- the cap wont fit the lens at all... this seems a bit awkward.. am i missing something/doing something wrong? how do other people use the lens/hood/cap? or can i just buy a lens cap that will fit the lens (and not the hood)?

- I got the lens used from a reputable NYC dealer. The lens was in mint condition and I paid $1700 for it. It's serial is 35xx xxx. Can anyone tell me what appx year this lens is? and did i just overpay by a mile (i did see some 50mm v2 lux's offered in the 1k range online)

thanks for all the help

Welcome to this forum!

Exactly. You will need either a snap-on cap for E43 filter thread or a push-on cap. Both are available I believe.

Your lens is from around 1993. Price seems somewhat on the high side to me, but if it is mint, I guess you should stop worrying and just enjoy the lens, it is a classic.

Cheers,

I have the same lens, serial 3494 XXX, early 90's,

If your hood is part no 12586, I agree it's not the best design; the 90/4 macro Elmar has a similar reversible hood and you will find the claws on the lens hood will damage the black anodising around the front of the lens as you repeatedly take the hood on and off.

Keeping in mind the lens has a narrower angle of view on an M8, I'd recommend you buy a 43mm IR filter if you need to and look for an E43 hood and lens cap which will permanently replace the standard hood.

As for price, sounds a bit expensive, but you have the security of having bought it from a dealer.

I bought a similar one like yours as well, but returned and exchanged it for an unused later model (Summilux pre-ASPH). Reasons being: (a) 43 filters and caps are difficult to find (nowadays, it's either 39mm or 46mm), (B) the closest focus was 1m while the next generation focuses down to 0.7m, and © somehow I could never get close-up portraits in focus on my Epson R-D1s at f/1.4.

The Summilux-M 50/1.4 # 11114 was built from 1966 to 1995 AFAIK.

Its reversible vented hood was much more effective and protective than the built-in ones of the last pre-asph models (# 11621, 11623, 11856, 11868) and that of the current aspheric lens.

Your 35xxxxx serial number may have been built between 1989 and 1992.

The price of 1700 USD seems expensive.

This # 3590xxx looks as new and is sold 1100 euro (about 1460 USD) in a rather pricey German shop for instance:

I bought the same lens with hood and cap in mint condition. $1700.00 is a little high, but I have found that once you purchase something, quit looking and comparing, because you'll always come across something cheaper. Now that you have it, use it and enjoy. It is a GREAT lens!!!
