They are smart not to blow out demand too soon. That's the populist view but a significant proportion of the price paid for a camera in the US will cover costs incurred in USD - Dealer and importer margin and warranty costs, components priced in USD such as the sensor, memory chips, processors and so on. For the rest, Leica will hedge their currency exposure so that the near collapse of the Greek economy will take time to work its way through to reduced US MSRP's. Sales in April could be of cameras shipped earlier, particularly if the cameras were already in stock. The Popflash report of 6 cameras on 1 April is very interesting. I will call around Popflash week. The trick is to call the small dealers. The big dealers have too many backorders to fill. I spent two days calling all the small dealers listed on the Leica US site and within about 10 days had a camera. Popflash also had alot of pre-orders to fill first, those 6 went to old orders. There has always been a two-month wait for service since that time, March '08. I finally sent it back in March 2010 before the warranty expired. Leica themselves indicated that they were at the mercy of the Euro when it went up...at least that was their reasoning for the price increases taken over the past 6 years....I'm not aware of any price cuts or discounts since the Euro started to tumble so... The Icelandic ash cloud has affected deliveries. New Zealand has a significant Chinese popuation who are buying up M9's and shipping them to China with a significant markup where along with other prestige goods it is used to demonstrate wealth. One local dealer received a complaint from an Asian customer that the autofocus wasn't functioning! Bill W Posted June 14, 2010 Share #28 Posted June 14, 2010 I originally ordered my M9 on 9/9/2009 from a dealer in NY who is "small". I waited and waited. I inquired with Popflash since I had bought several lens from them over the past two years but they only take my name if I made a deposit so I passed. My NY dealer called when they got a steel gray model in around the end of December and since I was first on the list, I was offered it but I wanted a black one. Again in February I was offered a steel gray model but passed. Then on March 30, 2010 "my birthday" Alex at Popflash called out of the blue to ask if I still wanted an M9. They had filled their deposit orders and were going back to their list of others. I snapped up one and it arrived shortly after that. To make a long story short, M9's were arriving in the US in March and April this year. You needed to be lucky or have a working relation to get one.
