Replacement for Series VII filter hood

I have just bought a 1968 35mm f1.4 Summilux for my M8.2. Great lens! But the UV/IR filter problem bugged me, mainly due to the fact that my wife wears black fleece on the mountain! There was little chance of finding the 12504 hood and then paying huge amounts for the relevant filter.

So here is my solution. I had tested a 12585 hood on the 35mm which works well - no vignetting with the smaller sensor size. The outside section of the 42mm attachment (the bit you would use to reverse the hood) could take a filter. The B+W filter at 40.5mm is 42.01mm, the hood is 42.09. I ground off the attachment lugs in the outside section of a used 12585H (not apreciable difference from a 12585) and dropped the filter in, with the screw thread on the outside (otherwise it would sit below the stop ring and hence prevent the hood mounting on the lens). It would probably stay in place with an "interference fit" but I have put one small dot of superglue in to hold it. I'm unlikely to change filters but can easily swap to either no hood/no filter or use another hood if I want no filter.

It seems fine in testing - good colours and no vignetting. A cheap and easy solution!

Enjoy the lux, does it focus to infinity?

I had a later one from the 80's and it would not focus to infinity on the M8.2

I sold it with my M6 since it was titanium and matched the M6..

It works well across the range - it's serial number is 2290... which makes it the so-called "new formula". It seems relatively lower contrast, certainly compared with a similar vintage 50mm Summicron, but it is so compact that I can see myself using it alot for mountain photography (except in gnarly weather!!!!).

I was on the lookout a couple of months ago for the exact same hood and found a used one at a Swedish retailer. I did not buy it so they might still have it. I think it was priced at aprox. 40 GBP. A lot cheaper than on the bay. And since you are in the UK you could order from Sweden and you wouldn´t have to pay import duty or extra taxes.

 

Check out L-Foto - Begagnatspecialisten klick on Leica in the menu and search for 12504. Then send them an e-mail to confirm they still have it.

Any possibility to install filter without 12504 hood (for lux 35mm f1.4 v2). I want to try this way since I just want a pure tiny compact 35mm without cumbersome hood. Any advices? Thanks!

I'd try to find 40mm filter (rare filters for Canon LTM lenses).

Then glue the filter inside the threadless front of 35mm Summilux-M.

Or just put a rubber band or tape to retain the 40mm filter.

This "solution" can become one if you are lucky finding 40mm filters.

I could not myself source those old filters.

There are 12504 Chinese made lens hoods on the bay. These unscrew to hold a series 7 or 49mm (have found some cheap 49mm filters don't fit) but B+W 49mm just slip in. Works well on my 1972 35 lux.

+1. My Chinese copy can even interchange its halves with those of the genuine 12504.

At the time I bought mine the copy cost $40 or so a used original 13504 almost $200. So I haven't been able to try this.  The copy is called a12504. I would think it was a direct copy.

13504 is not a Leica number AFAIK. The code number of the genuine Leica hood is 12504 and is engraved, as opposed to my Chinese copy where it is painted only.
