Robinyuill Posted June 1, 2010 Share #1 Posted June 1, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Morning all from a damp Edinburgh. I know that there are lots of items about the shutter count subject on the forum but using one of the techniques on my Macbook I am getting different results. An early image from my ownership gives me a number about 1600, then if I use two numbers image numbers from later on I get much lower, about 500/600 counts. Which is the best/most reliable method for a numerically challenged person like me???? Thanks... Robin.
Advertisement Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Hi Robinyuill, Take a look here Image Counts on M8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted June 1, 2010 Share #2 Posted June 1, 2010 Read the number from the EXIF of your last image, google a hex-decimal converter and convert to decimal.
blimey Posted June 1, 2010 Share #3 Posted June 1, 2010 In addition to Jaap's comment... it is the "Unique ID" on the EXIF which is in Hex that you need to convert.
ho_co Posted June 1, 2010 Share #4 Posted June 1, 2010 Robin-- Just to be clear: The "Unique Image ID" climbs and cannot be reset by the user. The "image number" in the file name can be reset in a number of ways, both up and down.
nfield Posted June 2, 2010 Share #5 Posted June 2, 2010 I'm curious about this also. I don't see "Unique Image ID" attribute on the EXIF metadata displayed in Adobe Lightroom. Am I missing something?
ho_co Posted June 2, 2010 Share #6 Posted June 2, 2010 Sorry, field; don't know where to find it in Lightroom. It looks like this in Bridge CS4: Hex 1091 converts to 4241 decimal according to Hexdecimal convertor.

digibob Posted June 2, 2010 Share #8 Posted June 2, 2010 Hi Robin. As youre on a mac theres a free download of an application called ? exif data .Go to "Version tracker " and search. You just drop the image on to its window and out comes the info ,easy.Useful for other reasons as well but if you only want the shutter actuations then hexdec reader is all you need. Cheers rob.
mbray Posted June 2, 2010 Share #9 Posted June 2, 2010 In Photoshop Elements 6, Organizer, you can get the Properties of any image which quotes the Unique ID. My M8.2 has, I have now discovered, done 910 actuations, with current file numbers being 205 behind that figure at 705. Obviously the previous owner reset the file numbering at some point. Robinyuill Posted June 2, 2010 Author Share #10 Posted June 2, 2010 Thanks for the helpful replies but having done the checks I get unique number 59d hex which converts to 1437 decimal from an early exposure and then 296 hex = 662 dec from an image taken last week. I will check with the dealer (Stephens in Manchester) to see if he knows but thanks again. Regards to all... Robin.
ho_co Posted June 2, 2010 Share #11 Posted June 2, 2010 You're right, Robin. From all I understand, that shouldn't happen. My camera has been in three times for work (including upgrade--it's not a problem camera), and the "Unique image ID" has continued to increment throughout. You could email Leica's customer service, because their range of experience is going to be greater than that of any dealer. At any rate, keep us posted. Definitely a strange issue. nfield Posted June 3, 2010 Share #12 Posted June 3, 2010 Thanks for the help. I was able to view the Unique Image ID from a free Mac program called EXIF Viewer. For some reason Lightroom doesn't display it.
Robinyuill Posted June 3, 2010 Author Share #13 Posted June 3, 2010 Thanks for the info. Been very careful and entered the numbers into the hex/dec number converters and it does show a higher image count which then changes to a lower count? Just bugs me that I find this out. Still love using the camera and saving hard to build up my kit. Just got to keep the costs from my wife's eyes!!!! Thanks all. Regards.. Robin.
