35ASPH Posted May 26, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 26, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, can anyone tell me what camera base plate they are using with their S2 for tripod mount? My camera should arrive shortly so wanted to get one while waiting. Only thing local Leica guy could tell me was that use one for a MF camera and he stopped when he saw my look. rickp13 Posted May 26, 2010 Share #2 Posted May 26, 2010 why not have a look at the really right stuff kirk arca (?) websites for a usable plate? they're all pretty much specialists in plates, L plates, rails and other tripod related gear. good luck rick
Constable Posted May 26, 2010 Share #3 Posted May 26, 2010 I bought a Markins plate from Nikonians in the end. I think it was the P67U Camera Plate but I will check when I get home this evening. It is OK but I would prefer something with a lip to prevent twisting (I use a ball head). I'm just planning to start cutting aluminium so if I get anything interesting I can send the plans. c6gowin Posted May 27, 2010 Share #4 Posted May 27, 2010 I use the Really Right Stuff B9 plate. It works well for the S2 although it is not specifically designed for it. I have considered getting a plate which has provisions to attach a hand strap, but haven't gone there yet. What I have works so I'm in no hurry to try something else. 35ASPH Posted May 27, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted May 27, 2010 Thank you Mark, Ed and Rick for your valuable suggestions. I visited the RRS page and the Markins setup and will decide between the two. Your help is appreciated.
jplomley Posted May 28, 2010 Share #6 Posted May 28, 2010 I'm using a RRS MPR-1b plate which very nicely covers the entire length of the S2. Extremely secure, I have no issues with creep, even in vertical orientation.
c6gowin Posted May 29, 2010 Share #7 Posted May 29, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Jeff, it appears the MPR-1b plate does not have a lip. Do you use 2 screws (1/4" and 3/8" sockets on the S2) to keep it from creeping?
jplomley Posted May 29, 2010 Share #8 Posted May 29, 2010 Mark, I did not use a 1/4" - 3/8" screw pair as the spacing on the S2 and MPR-1b do not quite match. In theory, you could use a pair of stop screws at the end of the plate with careful lateral positioning. I did not bother to do this once the plate tested sound under torque using just the 1/4" screw .
Likaleica Posted August 11, 2010 Share #9 Posted August 11, 2010 RRS now makes a L-plate specific for the S2. It is BS2-L. Kirk Enterprises does not have one (yet) on their website. The RRS plate looks pretty nice.

Mark, take a look at the Camadapter Handstrap with Arca QR plate that has two strap lugs. The hand strap itself is one of the best I've used to date. Camdapter | Products I use that set up on my Sony A900 and Hasselblad H4D/40 ... allows a hand strap AND a shoulder strap. With the shoulder strap connected, the camera hangs from the side (like the M5 did), which is actually easier to whip up to the eye. I've never had an issue of slippage. -Marc

rickp13 Posted August 17, 2010 Share #13 Posted August 17, 2010 today's Really Right Stuff newsletter anounced an L plate for the S2. quote from RRS newsletter: New L-Plate for Leica S2 The Leica S2 is an amazing camera, and we are currently shipping our new custom L-plate for it, BS2-L. Our plate is the perfect complement to this camera. It uses a beefy 3/8" mounting screw, and the locator pin assures an anti-twist fit. greetings from Germany Rick
Likaleica Posted August 17, 2010 Share #14 Posted August 17, 2010 I just received my BS2-L plate yesterday. It fits precisely and very snug. Haven't used it yet to make photographs, but it is low profile, secure, and looks like it will do the job. The L portion comes off the left side of the camera as you hold it, so it won't interfere with the right hand functions. All portals are exposed except a small portion of the portal on the base plate to which the extra battery fits.

Mine arrived yesterday as well and I agree that the build and finish is very good/typical with RRS plates. Will try it out in the field on the weekend. ryee3 Posted August 18, 2010 Share #16 Posted August 18, 2010 Does anyone know which model number would work for a L plate from RRS for the R9 with a DMR? I am looking for an L plate also for the R8 with a motor drive. RRS doenst make one specifically for our discontinued R system and didn not know which one to reccommend when I spoke to one of their salesperson.
