Guest Chris M Posted May 21, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 21, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) So, since my last posting, I SOLD ALL OF MY M8 AND LENS, but the Dr said that they could only slow the progression of the (wet macular) in my eyes. BUT I would like too no how people are doing with out a firmware upgrade, the last time I got involved in this subject I took a beating, but I've excepted my losses and am currently enjoying the X1 (auto focus) cam, it does all the work, I just point, lol. So as I stated before the latest info is: there will be no m8 firmware update at this time. Ps..... Maybe leica will reconsider if everybody starts over from scratch? and starts firing off emails too Leica (AGAIN) too let them no how serious all M8 owners are about what ever issues they want resolved:o Best, chris m. Advertisement Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 Hi Guest Chris M, Take a look here M8 Firmware ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted May 21, 2010 Share #2 Posted May 21, 2010 So, what's your motivation for starting this thread?
uptong Posted May 21, 2010 Share #3 Posted May 21, 2010 Have to agree with Andy's observation on this one. Cannot see any value in posts like this. When I bought my M8 kit I did so on the basis of what it could or could not do at the time it was bought not for any anticipation of what it may or may not be capable of being upgraded too at any point in the future. Bottom line is the M8 was and is still a fine camera, has its idiosyncrasies but then don't they all! To use a phrase or saying by a well known Aussie singer/songwriter/comedian DILLIGAF as to the appearance or not of any new firmware. Don't google the phrase if your are asily offended BTW. What is with the IR-problemacy and the using of Ir-filters and colour vignetting at wide-angles? These are bugs, it has to be fixed. The coding is no way for some lenses. Yes, the M8 ist still a nice camera.
dchalfon Posted May 21, 2010 Share #5 Posted May 21, 2010 a crazy thought. since the m8 is now discontinued, what if Leica released the latest firmware as open source on the web at could let great tech people around the world to further develop it. leica won't make money with the m8 anymore, so why not try? mjh Posted May 21, 2010 Share #7 Posted May 21, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) What is with the IR-problemacy and the using of Ir-filters and colour vignetting at wide-angles? These are bugs, it has to be fixed. It is an unfortunate fact that you need to use IR cut filters with the M8 and M8.2; there is no way to „fix“ that in firmware. The red vignetting caused by dichroic filters is already taken care of by the firmware. The M8 firmware has come a long way and is nearing a stable state. There are a few remaining issues still on Leica’s agenda and I suppose there will be a another update in due course, if only to add new lenses, but there will never be a magical fix for IR issues – those you have to live with. andybarton Posted May 21, 2010 Share #10 Posted May 21, 2010 why not try? What happens when this "openware" firmware bricks your M8 because someone hasn't written the code properly? Who are you going to run to? Does any other camera manufacturer, or manufacturer of similar products with inbuilt firmware allow all and sundry to fiddle with it? jaapv Posted May 21, 2010 Share #11 Posted May 21, 2010 No - but there used to be hacked Canon firmware and it was quite good.

Since you no longer own the camera, why on earth would you post this? The camera works perfectly well with the current firmware. I don't need an update and no one needs you picking at this. Have a nice day.
stunsworth Posted May 21, 2010 Share #13 Posted May 21, 2010 leica won't make money with the m8 anymore, so why not try? Because their reputation would suffer if someone released some firmware that 'bricked' people's cameras. Firmware is intrinsically tied up to the hardware. My understanding is that there's more involved than changing some lines of code and then loading it onto a camera to see if it works.
stunsworth Posted May 21, 2010 Share #14 Posted May 21, 2010 No - but there used to be hacked Canon firmware and it was quite good. From memory all that did was provide access to functions that were already present in the firmware but flagged as not to be used. Again from memory they were functions that the 20D had that the 300D didn't. That's a lot different from writing those functions from scratch. jaapv Posted May 21, 2010 Share #15 Posted May 21, 2010 Yeah - it was the 10D functions that were hacked into the 300D.

As a client, I feel personally offended by this company. At the beginning we were promised "perpetual upgrade program". It has not happened. I sold about 10 m-mount/Leica lenses (about 50 more to go). At the end I'll sell M8 (I keep it for lens testing). I really don,t care how much I'll get for M8, for return from selling the the lenses is much better than that from investment in any stock. Overall, M8 has been a frustrating but money making adventure for me.
Gerard Posted May 22, 2010 Share #17 Posted May 22, 2010 Overall, M8 has been a frustrating but money making adventure for me. Glad you made some money from your M8 journey. I guess you have little to complain about. Goodbye. Me? I'm still on honeymoon. Loving every time I open the bag and see the M8, excited everytime I see the raw files download. Looking forward to the software update - but my experience/ownership will not be lessened if it never arrives.

sbelyaev Posted May 22, 2010 Share #20 Posted May 22, 2010 I have absolutely nothing against M8, other than it produces horrible/unusable JPEGs and has weird reds, which are hard to correct during post-processing. These "inborn" problems should have been corrected in prior firmware upgrades. Leica has chosen to ignore them. Leica, as a company catering high-end market, must keep its promises.
