I was under the impression that the shutter was different in the M8.2 so I bought one instead (well, I wanted the more accurate framelines as well). I also have never heard of anyone having shutter issues with the M8.2, but a quick search on the net reveals the M8 does.
Advertisement Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Hi jsrockit, Take a look here M8.2 Reliability Compared to M8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wudai_e Posted February 10, 2011 Share #22 Posted February 10, 2011 From what I was told by my dealer, the M8.2s are more reliable. We are talking about the entire production runs of M8.2 vs the M8, not individual cameras, so chance of running into a bad M8.2 is less than a bad M8, but both are small to begin with. marknorton Posted February 14, 2011 Share #23 Posted February 14, 2011 The M8 was a learning experience for Leica and there were changes to the design during its life and Leica learned how to build and align the camera better over the same period. There's no evidence the M8.2 is fundamentally different from the M8, it simply included that accumulated knowledge gained over the 2 years or so of M8 production. That, for me, was the benefit of having two of my M8s, both early production, upgraded. As well as the framelines, shutter and LCD glass, they came back transformed. There were very few shutter problems on the M8, but when Leica started tinkering with it to get it quieter on the M8.2 and M8.u, shutterblade jams, mad recocking, and other errors appeared, however not in numbers high enough to be worrying. Guest fsellitto Posted February 15, 2011 Share #25 Posted February 15, 2011 I bought a m8.2 new two years ago. It's been such a great workhorse on the street with over 20,000 actuations and not any type of problem. I just bought a 2nd hand backup m8.2 with 2800 Actuations in mint shape at a steal. What a great camera the m8.2 is!! http://www.franksellitto.com

I don't know jaapv... a quick search around the net for M8.2 shutter issue or problem does not yield nearly as many results as M8 shutter issue. Could be that they just call the M8.2 a M8 when posting, but that is not like Leica nerds to do that. That said, you geek out with this stuff a lot more than I do, so I concede. Alcanara Posted February 19, 2011 Share #28 Posted February 19, 2011 Great and useful thread... thanks all. If I were to buy an early M8 and go for the upgrades.... assuming they still do this.... approximately how much would this cost.... can a dealer do it, or does it need to go away?? Cheers Stuart
Nicoleica Posted February 19, 2011 Share #29 Posted February 19, 2011 Hi. You have to send the camera to Leica, and the cost depends upon which upgrades you wish to have. Here's a link that will tell you everything that you need to know. Leica Camera AG - Service - M8 Upgrade
Erik Gunst Lund Posted February 20, 2011 Share #30 Posted February 20, 2011 You can have your Leica dealer take care of the upgrade for you. Highly recommended if you find a cheap M8. You get a full warranty for one year after the upgrade directly from Leica, mine took two weeks via dealer. I did and really enjoy the full upgrade, just what I wanted!
