john cleland Posted May 8, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 8, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi - this is my first thread as an official Leica owner. For the past 20 years I have been using Nikons and Hasselblads but recently have been hypnotised by the reviews and articles regarding the Leica systems and especially the M9. I had recently been to my local Leica dealer and tried an M7 just to get a feel - I knew I would like it and that it was only a matter of time before I put my name on the list for the M9. I went back in yesterday to price up some old Nikon gear to part chop and while in there was asking about the 35mm Cron and Lux. The sales guy said that he had just got a second hand mint condition Cron ASPH in yesterday and did I want to see it? Not only did I see it but I then spent £1,300 and bought it! So now I am the proud owner of a wonderful lens with no camera to put it on. My friends have suggested I use it as an ornament, maybe a candle holder for the next six months while waiting for the body to arrive. Telling the wife what I had just done was fun!!! Still, I am so proud to join your ranks and look forward to the day when I can actually rotate my lens onto the camera body and press the shutter for the first time. John D Cleland Welcome to the forum, John! As it happens I just posted a shot taken with that wonderful lens, the 35 Cron ASPH. It is the only lens (so far) my wife's asked me not to sell because I've taken some great pictures with it (and of her). At the Galleria Ferrari museum in Maranello, D50 Lancia Don btw, I did that, too. I bought a lens (35 Cron v.IV "Bokeh King") before I had a camera body with bayonet mount to shoot it on. I like people who do that. A week later I ran across a screw-mount 35 Cron ASPH and got it for my LTMs. I like the bokeh on it much, much better than the so-called "Bokeh King"'s so I quickly sold the latter to help pay for the former (how's that for creative financing). You have my permission to go ahead and get the M7 so you can be enjoying it while you wait for the M9. <devil>
01af Posted May 8, 2010 Share #5 Posted May 8, 2010 Telling the wife what I had just done was fun! You know that one Summicron-M 35 Asph is the equivalent of a dozen Vuitton handbags and six pairs of shoes? P.S. The lens I bought before having a camera to use it on was an Elmarit-M 135 mm 1:2.8. john cleland Posted May 8, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted May 8, 2010 Good to know there are others out there who have done the same as me Don - love your shot, maybe one day I will have a complete camera and lens that allows me to do something similar. All the best - John
elgenper Posted May 8, 2010 Share #7 Posted May 8, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) .... I ran across a screw-mount 35 Cron ASPH.... I didn´t think such animals existed.... There were only 577 specimens made of the very first Summicron 35 (V. 1) with screw mount, all made between 1958 (one prototype) and 1962; after that there was only M bayonet mounts for all Summicrons. And an ASPH, even? Is it some custom modification? As for the Summicron 35 ASPH on the M9, it´s great. Got mine back from recalibration 2 days ago.... Hi, Per, here's a picture of it mounted on my Leica II and there's some information about that lens model in succeeding posts in that thread by Luigi Bertolotti. 35 Cron ASPH on my Leica II Don

elgenper Posted May 8, 2010 Share #10 Posted May 8, 2010 Hi, Per,here's a picture of it mounted on my Leica II and there's some information about that lens model in succeeding posts in that thread, Luigi Bertolotti. 35 Cron ASPH on my Leica II Don Wow! Didn´t know about these; very interesting! Does look slightly odd on the II, but the images are first-rate. My own II (only LTM camera I´ve held on to after I stopped collecting in the ´80:es....) has an uncoated Summar 50/2 on. It does give a special "glow" when I try it on the M9... Your Summicron must be a real collector´s item....
msk2193 Posted May 8, 2010 Share #11 Posted May 8, 2010 John, Welcome aboard. When I ordered my M9, the dealer only had "your" exact lens in stock and it sat on my shelf for some 5 months before I finally got my hands on my own M9. I am still waiting for the 50mm Lux I ordered with the M9, but in the meantime have had tons of fun with the M9 and the 15, 24, and 35mm lenses. The 90 is supposed to be back from Leica service this week but still no sign of the 50mm. Just enjoy comparing the size of the 35mm to your Nikon 35mm lens for a while. Being screwmount I can use it on any of my classic bodies--in anticipation of the M10 I'm saving up for. I took it to Europe last year. Here's some pictures taken with it as well as of it on my IIIg (where it looks great). European Vacation 2009 Don

menos I M6 Posted May 9, 2010 Share #16 Posted May 9, 2010 Congrats John on the sane decision ;-) Btw. write this up as a one time thrill only, as I would never buy any lens unseen, before trying it on the camera, it should fit to (read range finder lenses especially so). I always bring the camera and try several samples of a certain lens, to pick the best. I bought a 90 Cron yesterday and all 6 samples (3 APOs and 3 pre ASPH) looked, felt and focussed completely different! Be careful out there - and cool wife you have there I assume ;-)
