Advertisement Posted December 22, 2006 Posted December 22, 2006 Hi davidmires, Take a look here On The Beach. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
azzo Posted December 22, 2006 Share #2 Posted December 22, 2006 Very nice light scene and composition. Well captured David. Best Azzo
stuny Posted December 22, 2006 Share #3 Posted December 22, 2006 David - Absolutely gorgeous in its simplicity, beautiful early moning light, composition and choice of focus. It feels like what Hopper would have painted had he ever been there. To me this looks like Southern California.
jmr Posted December 22, 2006 Share #4 Posted December 22, 2006 David, simply beautiful in the soft, pink light - thanks.
davidmires Posted December 24, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted December 24, 2006 Ivan, Stuart, and John, thanks for commenting. I wasn't sure about this at first, but after looking at it a while, I decided to post it. I quite like it now, actually. Stuart, this is Long Island Sound, just up the coast from you. Fairfield beach, in the evening ;-) Cheers, David.
martinop Posted December 24, 2006 Share #6 Posted December 24, 2006 Like the solitude + the lighting and colors.
mhanke Posted December 27, 2006 Share #7 Posted December 27, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Wonderful mood! The seagull is just a perfect addition. In my humble opinion, the horizon line could be a bit more off-centered, but since the chair is drawing the attention, this is not an obvious problem. Best regards, Marcus
davidmires Posted December 31, 2006 Author Share #8 Posted December 31, 2006 Paul, thanks for taking the time to comment. Marcus - I see what you mean. Perhaps if I had something to stand on, I could have placed the horizon line lower. On the other hand, I really like the sand too...
jonathangraham Posted December 31, 2006 Share #9 Posted December 31, 2006 David - first I saw your lovely seagull, now this. Bottom line is that you have a great eye for composition. IMHO, your pics are really better in B&W because of the style (especially the beach). Suggest you give it a try.
harmsr Posted December 31, 2006 Share #10 Posted December 31, 2006 David, Beautiful photo. Can I go slightly OT on you? You comment that the photo was taken with the DR Summicron. I thought that the lens would not work on the M8 due to the smaller opening in the body vs. a normal M. Did you modify the rear of your DR for it to work? Is so, how? Your comments on getting this lens to work would be appreciated. I like the lens, but have been unwilling to experiment with it on my M8. Thanks, Ray

IMHO, your pics are really better in B&W because of the style (especially the beach). Suggest you give it a try. Thanks for the comment Jonathan. I have tried this in B/W (and others also), but I seem to be only interested in color at the moment. I thought I would be shooting a lot more B/W with this camera, but I'm just not feelin' it yet I guess...

I will start another thread in the digital forum describing the modification. Cheers, David.
lambroving Posted January 14, 2007 Share #13 Posted January 14, 2007 David, Nice image. Where did you take this? Looks like VA.
robert_parker Posted January 14, 2007 Share #14 Posted January 14, 2007 David Works well at every level -Jonathan's comment is interesting because I imagine it would desaturate well but speaking personally (as another devotee of colour photography) I'm glad you left it as it is. davidmires Posted February 22, 2007 Author Share #15 Posted February 22, 2007 Hi William, I missed your comment somehow. Thanks for the compliment. This was taken at Fairfield beach, in Fairfield, Connecticut. Thanks the time to comment Robert. I am shooting a lot more color with the M8 than I traditionally have with film. It's really nice to make the choice in post though. Cheers! I'm not really happy with the color in the original post. I think this one is better: Welcome, dear visitor! rgeorge911 Posted February 22, 2007 Share #17 Posted February 22, 2007 Personally, I like them in this order: B&W First color Second color I think the first color shot is somehow different in color than most beach shots. Perhaps it's because it's the East instead of West coast (sunset instead of sunrise?). I feel that the second color version approaches more the golden "traditional" for this type of shot, but I prefer the other. Oh, I think the B&W really makes the features in/over the water (the bird, etc.) really jump out at you! Thanks!
cam2000 Posted February 22, 2007 Share #18 Posted February 22, 2007 Hi David I like the BW it gives more strenght to the composition........ but I am also incline to the second color one...... for the warmth it brings! Nice solitude moment..... even that bird is soaring alone!
lambroving Posted February 22, 2007 Share #19 Posted February 22, 2007 David, You must be even busier than I am! Could be a screen issue but the second, warmer version does not appear to be as sharp as the first. Think I might prefer it somewhere in between the two. Since you were there, which is closest to what you remember?
azzo Posted February 22, 2007 Share #20 Posted February 22, 2007 David, Colour in the original is nicer IMHO. Also, this image works very well in b&w. Azzo
