why does it seem like all the 28 f2 m lens offered on ebay are located in china? would you say its safe to purchase a lens from china? a few of the listing seem legit, or from stores that look or appear to be legit.

I would guess (reading the original post), that the price isn´t the problem. But avalability.

I am in Asia where there is no stock. The shops only have low demand items like the Summarits. We have to buy our M9's from Europe. Meanwhile you can find nearly anything on ebay at inflated prices. It is like going to a scalper for football tickets.

i was looking on ebay since there is not a dealer or store that has one in my area. i can take a short drive and find a demo reasonably priced.

i was looking on ebay since i would prefer to buy one from a user and not a retailer.

the other thing is that my brother travels and works in china, but i would never NEVER buy anything from anyone off ebay that resided or did business in china. send my brother into a store, yes, but off ebay NO.

it just seemed odd to me that there were so many of this specific lens, the 28 f2, on ebay that were in china. it did make me wonder about the fake market problem and how everything seems to be knocked off in china.

Are there 28 Cron ASPH copies available in China? Likely not.

Would I buy second hand Leica glass off eBay from China? No.

Would I buy second hand Leica glass off eBay from Germany? No.

Why not? There is such a big sample variation in used glass, that I prefer, to find a shop, which has several copies of a certain lens and pick out the nicest.

I live in China for a few years now. The level of scam is likely similar to the one, you will find in western countries. The bad picture, we westerners have from China is very much implicated by massive media blurb with polemic front page lines.

I do buy my Leica gear exclusively in Chinese camera shops (second hand).

There is a similar crop of excellent shops with honest owners and reliable sales personnel, towards a wide variety of shops and sellers to stay away from.

Your issue though I see not entirely with dealing with a seller of Chinese heritage, but with the big pita of dealing with oversea shipment and customs, piling up costs and waiting time.

The reason, why there are so many 28 Crons advertised from China could well be differences in availability. I always see one or two samples in the shops around here.

Prices though are another matter. Used Leica is priced similarly as in Europe, some items (film cameras) even higher. New prices on some items (lenses) seem generally lower as in Europe (about 20% on some items).

Other items are much more expensive than in Europe (there is no upper boarder of markup, when demand is high here). M9 prices where as high as 7.500,- EUR (!!!) lately.

Good luck with your decision - the 28 Cron is a very fine piece of glass.

Just sold my 28mm Summicron ASPH on ebay last week. and I'm not in China. Tried to advertise it at a reasonable price in several photo forums but no takers so went to ebay as last resort. I would think the 28 would be more popular with the M8 crowd since its a wide angle on M9 or film so not as popular as the 35 or 50 lenses.

another member just sent me your link and i think i pm'd you. from a newb perspective its kind of hard to search every forum. ive got a line on one at a store about 5 hours away for 3300, then another one im watching on ebay. i will admit, this little lens sure is holding its price and selling.

The emergences of the Digital M has certainly changed the world-wide availability of M lenses; it used to be the case, before the M8 came out, that demand was low and lenses were available ex-stock from Hong Kong at prices which were very attractive. No more. More local demand, changing exchange rates, tighter supply mean HK is no longer the happy hunting ground for new bargains it once was.

As for secondhand, I agree buying can be difficult. I've bought secondhand 5 times with no problems but I can certainly imagine difficulties where the condition of the lens is open to debate. "Mint" is pretty unambiguous, but "Exc+" is open to (mis-) interpretation.

I sold mine on e-bay and now wish I had kept it - that was before the advent of the M8. I see that lens coming back to me. It seems the big Hong Kong sellers on E-bay are quite reputable but I've never dealt with them.

Before i got my 50mm Summicron, i was originally looking for the Elmar version via an eBay seller in Hong Kong but further enquiry via my contacts there told me to stay away from that seller; i was lucky this time around, others might not be that fortunate
