Clandrel Posted April 12, 2010 Share #1 Posted April 12, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I guess I'm wrong but my 50mm 2.0 feels a bit loose. It's hard to explain, but if I nudge it a bit, it feels loose where the focus ring is. It's fairly tight, but not 100% solid. Is that the way it should be? giordano Posted April 12, 2010 Share #3 Posted April 12, 2010 Of course it's not 100% solid, it's a focusing mount. How much free play to expect depends on the version (Leica have been selling 50mm Summicrons for nearly 60 years for rangefinder and reflex cameras, with several different optical formulae and ten or more different designs of focusing mount), how much use it's had and in what conditions, the state of the lubricant, and so on - and of course on how hard and how often you "nudge" it. Axial (in/out) play affects focusing and is therefore much more serious than lateral (left/right/up/down) play.
wizard Posted April 12, 2010 Share #4 Posted April 12, 2010 What type of Summicron 50 is it that you are enquiriing about? In my experience, version II Summicrons often show some play (which may be due to their age, of course) while version IV Summicrons (the latest and current version) almost never show any play. Clandrel Posted April 12, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted April 12, 2010 It's the latest. From 1999. It's, I would say, swaying maybe a millimeter lateral. But only where the focus ring is...
Redridge Posted April 12, 2010 Share #6 Posted April 12, 2010 My 50 cron has no play whatsoever.... the focus is very responsive w/o any play at all, hence the reason why the latest 50 cron is considered to be one of the fastest to focus.

A millimeter is a lot, that's definetely not ok. Mine doesn't have any lateral play at all. Andy
frc Posted April 13, 2010 Share #8 Posted April 13, 2010 A mm. sounds alarming.{;-{( My Cron 50's ( 50 jahre version, ( built 2004 ? ) optical the same as the recent ) focus ring did feel sloppy and there was noticeable lateral play. I have had it CLA'ed by Will van Manen here in The Netherlands. What I got back felt like a new piece of gear. If you're lucky you'll find a good tech in your region. If so, bring in the lens and have it checked. Best, Fr.
