fotolebrocq Posted April 7, 2010 Share #1 Posted April 7, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sorry if this has been asked before, but is it possible to use Leica caps with Zeiss lenses and if so how obtainable are they? I'm using a 50mm Sonnar with my M9 and the cap is always falling off. Cheers, Tony
Advertisement Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 Hi fotolebrocq, Take a look here Zeiss Lens Caps. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted April 7, 2010 Share #2 Posted April 7, 2010 Yes - apart from the brand, all round clip-on ones are more or less generic.Just use the same diameter.
wlaidlaw Posted April 7, 2010 Share #3 Posted April 7, 2010 The Zeiss caps for the ZM lenses are one of the worst pieces of design I have ever seen. I sent Zeiss an email some years ago, asking them to change the lines from along the axis of the lens to right angles to the lens axis. They replied that they had not had any other complaints. I know Sean Reid just for one, agrees with me. It is impossible to grip the lens hood and it always squirts out of your fingers, when you squeeze the tabs. I end up sticking small half moons of the hook side of Velcro onto the tabs. It is still not good but manageable. Wilson
jaapv Posted April 7, 2010 Share #4 Posted April 7, 2010 Well, yes, I ditched mine too for that reason. I use a Leica cap on my Biogon, or, if I cannot find it one of the many el-cheapo generic ones I have lying around.
fotolebrocq Posted April 7, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted April 7, 2010 Many thanks for your replies - I will order a couple of Leica caps tomorrow Cheers, Tony
therbert Posted April 7, 2010 Share #6 Posted April 7, 2010 I use generic lens caps a lot. It's usually easy to find most sizes - 46mm, for example - but 39mm caps can be a little more difficult. I absolutely agree about the Zeiss caps. I have only the 25mm Zeiss but I quickly learned to put the Zeiss cap in my parts box and use a generic cap. fotolebrocq Posted April 9, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted April 9, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just to update this thread - my 46mm Leica lens cap arrived today and it fits the 50mm Sonnar perfectly and is very secure. The downside is that you can't use it with the hood attached Cheers, Tony

Not used them on my Leica gear but used on DSLR stuff and they work well. Hood Hat | Demo Page

I quite liked them but am aware that's a minority view.....
wlaidlaw Posted April 10, 2010 Share #10 Posted April 10, 2010 Well that was the principal virtue of the Zeiss and Voigtlander pinch-in designs! I quite liked them but am aware that's a minority view..... Pinch in caps are just fine if they have the grip lines parallel to the cap, so that they provide positive grip when mounting or removing the cap. For example, I have a Casio one that I use on my MATE V2, that works infinitely better than the original Leica one. You can actually remove it when the ventilated hood is fitted. The Leica one has to be picked with your finger nail and allowed to drop into your hand. It beats me that folks who can design something as complicated as a MATE, can't do something as simple as a lens cap. Good rule with a design on anything is to prototype it and then get your wife or parents to try it. They are less interested in the aesthetics or technical whizziness and more in just "does it work." wilfredo Posted April 10, 2010 Share #11 Posted April 10, 2010 I've also used Leica lens caps on a Zeiss. Where Leica falls short is with their lens hood caps. I've lost the one on my 35mm Summicron ASPH twice. It falls off without warning.
