I met Jono over on dpreview 8 years ago on the Oly forum and since then have looked him up periodically to see what he's shooting and to read his witty repartee. Looked yesterday and was alarmed to see that he hadn't posted in a long time! Is he okay?

 

Then I was sent over here by a board member who said he now hangs out here.

 

Well, I wouldn't ordinarily post here, but I DO shoot with an LX3 and my husband owns an old M5 (I think...i can never keep those numbers straight...might be a 3)!

 

So, is he indeed here? If so, I must find his threads and read to see what he's up to. I love his photography and note that he's written a Blurb field guide to the M9, so expect to find him sooner or later, here!

Jono is like a guide light, I figure I could set my gear on automatic and just buy what he buys - though not sure my images will match his... :p

Hey Jono, While we are all being so obsequious, I thought I'd tell you that I got your book last week and it is filled with some great photographs. It is in front of me on the coffee table with the likes of Steve McCurry, et. al..

 

It was interesting to be able to see the list of the lenses you used and the camera data for each photo. And, of course, our favorite, the WATE really shined.

Interesting that some of this crowd do go back to the Olympus fora from the E-1 days. (I remember Jono's comments and pictures from then as well. I still have an E-1 Raw file of one of his churches around somewhere.) The Kodak colors and CCD characteristics were first seen in the 5 Mpx E-1 chip, which is a pretty close ancestor of the 10 Mpx Kodak chip in the M8 and the 18 MPx Kodak chip in the M9 (and the chip in the S2 as well). Unfortunately the E-3 went off in a different, CMOS, LiveView direction. But they were water, beer, and even dog-piss proof.

It is interesting -- I do really like Jono's pictures, but my lens preferences are completely non-overlapping with his. I am a classical 35 + 90mm man, and my favourite short focal length is 24/25mm. I have just sold my 75mm, and will probably sell my 28 Summicron too. Still I do doubt that this is the reason why I do not take pictures like Jono does!

What? Don´t say it was your lens I bought at the LP auction 2 weeks ago....:D

 

There was a Summicron and a Summarit, both like new. I got the Summicron, and I´m very happy with it; together with the new Summicron 35, it´s my two-lens setup.

 

I did use 35 + 90 in the old days, but always found there was a "hole in the middle", and carrying a 50 as well was just one lens too many. 35 + 75 is just perfect - for me...;)

Thank you for buying the book, I'm hoping that the good cause will rescue us from the dreaded clutches . . . . but I doubt it. I'm also glad you like it - the lens information took longer to do than the rest of the book (thanks to Chris for the suggestion).

I still feel a real 'connection' between that E1 sensor and the M8/M9 sensor - but I'm not sure that Beth even had an E1? I think she had the E10 (another fine camera), and then went over to Canon. I'm not sure that CMOS is so much the trouble as attempts to get it to do ridiculously high ISO - the Sony A900 CMOS sensor for instance produces lovely colours and tonality.

I can see the temptation of 35 and 90 for a two lens setup. But I still prefer the 75 'cron because of it's size (over the 90 'cron), and the fact of focusing down to .7 of a metre.

I'm not sure that I'll ever settle down to a two lens setup though - it really depends where I am and what I'm doing. For travel the WATE, MATE and 90 elmarit make a fine setup though!
