Justshot Posted April 4, 2010 Share #1 Posted April 4, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Could the M9 eyelet be scratched by the strap rings? Not sure if any of you had noticed this
Advertisement Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 Hi Justshot, Take a look here Eyelet. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jbhthescots Posted April 4, 2010 Share #2 Posted April 4, 2010 Not only that, but I have noticed that when you change lenses on the M9 it is entirely possible for some dust to get into the sensor. What with this and the eyelet, Leica should be considering a recall.
thrice Posted April 4, 2010 Share #3 Posted April 4, 2010 Are we referring to strap lugs? Or the viewfinder eyepiece? The viewfinder can't easily be scratched by split rings on the strap. Of course the strap lugs will get scratched by putting on the split rings. They'll even be worn on the inside by the continuous moving of your strap!!!!! I normally don't criticise those trying to keep their camera in tip top condition, I myself use a half-case and a screen protector. But really, fretting about this is just a little ridiculous. If it really irks you, have them replaced when you get a CLA if they show much wear.
250swb Posted April 4, 2010 Share #4 Posted April 4, 2010 I'd worry about this as well if my camera lived in a display case, but as I've taken it out of the box now I guess it just has to be used as a camera and not an ornament. Steve
Marty Posted April 4, 2010 Share #5 Posted April 4, 2010 Joking aside, I have wondered about this too. As a wriststrap user I feel both the eyelet and the strap ring are subject to more wear than with shoulder straps, and it is easy to imagine at least the strap ring giving way eventually. Nothing is stopping you from using an all fabric strap though. Might still break, but without the wear on the eyelet And then there is Luigi's... thrice Posted April 4, 2010 Share #6 Posted April 4, 2010 Really Marty? How many examples of M6's have you seen with a damaged or overly worn strap lug? The M6 has been around since 1984... Will you be using your M9 until 2035?
Marty Posted April 4, 2010 Share #7 Posted April 4, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am not an expert on M6 (and note this is the M9 forum) but a quick search does reveal at least one old thread here about M6 lugs coming loose, and M4 lugs worn down and almost through. That's enough reason at least for me to continue wondering about it. It is not about me though; the OP didn't state any motivations so why not keep all options open. Viv Posted April 4, 2010 Share #8 Posted April 4, 2010 Probably. A camera is a tool. Like all tools, it is subject to wear. This is normal.
marknorton Posted April 4, 2010 Share #9 Posted April 4, 2010 The sharp ends of strap split rings can certainly scratch the eyelets which is one reason why I gave up using the wide leather strap, the other being that the length adjustment studs scratch the top cover. If ever there was a Leica product which is not fit for purpose, this is it. Replacing the eyelets is a major - probably the biggest - job in terms of the level of dismantling required. The standard strap does not have these problems because only a wire loop passes through the eyelet. If you want to use another strap, look at replacing the split rings with Nikon's triangular equivalent which will not rotate and damage the finish. Justshot Posted April 5, 2010 Author Share #10 Posted April 5, 2010 Thanks for all your responses. Keep them coming... Just a thought. Would it be possible to use gaffer tape on the eyelet?
Googaliser Posted April 5, 2010 Share #11 Posted April 5, 2010 Thanks for all your responses. Keep them coming... Just a thought. Would it be possible to use gaffer tape on the eyelet? Vaseline might help - just smear some on to act as a barrier...
Viv Posted April 5, 2010 Share #12 Posted April 5, 2010 Thanks for all your responses. Keep them coming... Just a thought. Would it be possible to use gaffer tape on the eyelet? Probably. But why waste the time wen you could be shooting?
SJP Posted April 5, 2010 Share #13 Posted April 5, 2010 I think it is possible to slip some plastic tubing around the metal rings on the strap, possibly just some electrical wire insulation. More luxury version would be silcone or teflon tubing.

andybarton Posted April 5, 2010 Share #15 Posted April 5, 2010 Of all the things in the whole world to worry about, this must be on at least page 2. If you are a collector, the camera should still be in its box and never put anywhere near a strap. If you are a photographer, you are going to have a completely horrible time with the camera if you worry about the strap lug getting scratched. Give it six months and there is abound to be a scratch in the body somewhere It's a bit like buying a new car and then worrying about taking it out of the garage because it might get scratched in the car park. That way madness lies... IMHO, of course.
swamiji Posted April 5, 2010 Share #16 Posted April 5, 2010 Andy Should this thread even be in the M9 forum? Perhaps the http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-collectors-historica/ forum would be better? Since this thread is more geared for Collectors. Plus all M's have Eyelets... pop Posted April 5, 2010 Share #17 Posted April 5, 2010 Yes, the wear on the eyelets is a problem, but not one which keeps me awake at nights. Take it to an electrician and have him apply some shrink tubes to the rings which go through the eyelets.
andybarton Posted April 5, 2010 Share #18 Posted April 5, 2010 Maybe Leica should publish the hardness quotient for the eyelets so that worried persons can find securing rings of a softer material so as to be sacrificial. Just needs watching so that when the ring breaks, the camera doesn't fall to the floor in a nasty fashion.
earleygallery Posted April 5, 2010 Share #19 Posted April 5, 2010 I've never heard of an eyelet wearing through, has that actually happened? I've always taken care of my gear but it's never occurred to me to worry about minute scratches on a strap lug. It's a bit like worrying about scuffing the soles of a new pair of shoes! roydonian Posted April 10, 2010 Share #20 Posted April 10, 2010 Could the M9 eyelet be scratched by the strap rings? Your question seems to have attracted the unwanted attentions of the 'sarcastic brigate', but was a perfectly legitimate one. Eyelet wear was a problem in older Leica cameras, as the sad state of some screw-era examples shows. Modern cameras have eyelets made of much tougher material, but I can't remember the date these were introduced.
