Lenshoods

I have been airing my M9 for the first time and the results are not bad at all! I´ve been shooting with the 35mm cron, but I´ve decided to stick to the 50mm lux till I get more proficient with the camera, as recommended in another thread with advice for the novices.

It´s a steep learning curve!

Then the question: The 35 cron came with a hood, but the 50 lux and 90 cron didn´t. Would you advice me to buy a hood for the 50?

If you drop it that hard, a slipon hood will knock the optical cell of the lens hard enough to cause damage I would think a vented hood, in such a case would bend on the vents without causing major damage.

Not my experience Jaap. I've rescued a Summicron 50 a couple of decades ago thanks to the clip-on 12585. The vented part of the hood was crashed but the lens itself was OK.

Hey guys, I'm wondering, since Leica build their lenses for astounding performance right from wide open aperture, very resistant to flare and produce extremely good quality images, are the hoods even neccessary? I mean, do they make that much of a difference?

I don't (or not yet) notice anything different at all with or without hoods. I never even pull my hood out of my 50 lux..

50 Luxes are mostly flare free but a good hood may be usefull to protect glass from rain and bumps also when using a filter.

+1

It adds to the overall lens footprint, but peace of mind is priceless IMHO. And then, in extreme lighting, it may even protect from flare:D
