First, I have had the aforementioned iPad photo app crash while downloading photos with the connection kit (and sometimes kernel panic with auto reboot) problem where anywhere from 1-3 images would load to the iPad, and then the app crashes... But then occasionally it ust magically works, and all is well. The trick is to just be patient, and keep retrying until all the photos are transferred.

This has happened to me once or twice too. In each instance, I realized that the connection piece had been either no completely square, or had been joggled a bit at some point during the DL. (this is even a bigger problem using the USB interface for my Canon 50D, which uses CF cards, and therefore needs a separate card reader attached to the connector. Now I make sure to put the Ipad down somewhere level, press the connector in firmly, and don't touch ANYTHING until it has finished the DL. Doing this, I haven't had any further problems. It would be nice if the connection piece seated firmly enough that you didn't have to worry about it, though!

I've had a couple of heart stopping moments the couple of times that the Ipad has crashed too. In fairness, it seems to reboot with no problem, and no loss of data.

If it was not for the crashing bug, the hoops are fairly small to jump through. Seeing that this device, and 3rd party software for it are only a few months old, it's all not so bad.

If it's not a problem with a wiggly connection, I'd take it in for service (or replacement!) when you get home. I have had NO crashes that weren't directly related to an unintentional wiggle of the connection during DL. I've had the Ipad since the first day the 3G was available, and use it daily.

I indeed miss the functionality of my MacBook pro-- but it is a 17", and I don't miss the weight and worry about leaving it in a hotel, etc.

Also, I have Photoshop for iPad , but it was just updated while on my trip-- and I find the workflow of PhotoGene a little smoother.

i have used photogene and the prior iteration of photoshop and the current version....

while photogene feels more like a photoediting program photoshop is what i think apple would design for a photo editing program for the ipad (i use aperture on my macbook) - i like it

As a slight aside, since I changed to shooting DNG and JPEG for iPad purposes, twice I have used the JPEG's direct, so that they can be given straight to someone else, rather than my usual route of converting the DNG/RAW's to TIFF or JPEG in C1/V5 or LR3. This was when I was on a trip and I only had an iPad with me, so unable to convert the DNG's.

The out of the camera JPEG's from the M9 were I thought, a bit poor. The colours were not very true and somewhat garish, the pictures were rather dark with a very compressed dynamic range look to them. In comparison to the JPEG's that came out of C1 of exactly the same images, the in camera conversions were not up to the standard of much cheaper cameras. It is as if Leica (probably correctly) assume most users will go the DNG route and have not bothered to put a lot of work into the in camera conversion. Now it may be that this only applies to flash photos, as both these sets were all flash (SF58-D) and daylight JPEG's may be fine. What are other folks' thoughts/experiences.

I transferred my pics taken on my M9 in DNG/JPG to my iPad using the SD card reader of the camera connection kit and the images look good initially.

Unfortunately, upon closer inspection, in almost every picture I notice a vertical line around the middle, like the photo is stitched together from 2 pictures. The easiest way to tell is to look for a horizontal line and there will be a kink where the line is. I thought it was a problem with my sensor but the line is not present in Iphoto, Aperture or Lightroom 3 when I load the files from the SD card to my Mac.

I am not sure if it is a problem with the iPad's JPG or DNG converter. Has anyone experienced this?

Just looked at a set I took last week, many of which were taken in a striped marquee, which would show this up instantly and no - no sign of the join. So I regret it must be your M9 or iPad.

Take some high ISO pics of a white or grey wall in a dark room. Import into LR3 and play with the Recovery, Fill Light and Contrast sliders. If the sensor is the problem, the line should reveal itself there.

I hope it's not the M9.

Also, turn off the noise reduction for good measure as I think the default applies some.

I doubt it is a problem with the sensor since the problem is not showing up anywhere else except for the iPad.

I'm sorry, but it could easily be instead.

The reason is that when you upload a DNG file on any raw developer listed before, a slight correction is applied by default, so it's common not to see the eventual line of pixels.

Since the iPad is not applyin' any correction on the files instead, it's easy to see an issue like a dead line.

What William described is a trick we used for years since the M8 came out to check those lines and sensors' problem.

Good point, you can't. My point was, just turn it off in LR.

When I say "play with the sliders", I mean to the extreme. You aren't t trying to create a well exposed image, you should just be pushing the Fill Light to 100% (for example) and creating a really crappy image. Just look for the line to resurrect or hopefully not.

Thanks for your help, I did as instructed and the images look fine. No lines or anything. I can breathe a sigh of relief.

Now I need to find out why the images look like that on the iPad.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've set my M9 to produce DNG+jpg fine so that I can get a good review reaolution on my ipad. The problem is when I opened up the ipad folder in My Computer in Windows, it is showing as 2 DNG files instead of 1 DNG and 1 JPEG. Both files has the same file size, it means that shooting DNG+jpeg is using TWICE the storage space in ipad. Furthermore I cannot find the jpeg files anywhere. Anyone else have the same issue?

Not on my Mac with my iPad. Perhaps a Windows iTunes thing?

??

what app are you using to open up the "iPad folder" in Windows? Or is that a folder you are synching to? Or are you saying that your camera isn't producing JPEGs?

All you need to do is

1) copy the JPEGs from your SD card with a reader to a folder

2) synch the iPad with the folder

I wouldn't bother with the DNGs since the iPad can't read them.

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that I'm trying to download the photos from Ipad (I've transferred the photos from M9 to Ipad using the camera connection kit).

I'm viewing the Ipad folder structure using Windows Explorer and it is showing 2 DNGs file of similar name instead of 1 DNG and 1 Jpg

My guess is that this is some bug with the driver for the iPad. Are they really both DNG files when you copy them? You can check the properties of the file.

The iPad will properly recognize image pairs as JPEG+RAW and when I connect to Aperture or LR on my Mac, they both see both file types properly and download them as they should.
