Shade Posted March 27, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 27, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone... I just got my M9... I was on M8 a while back (bought it used), and I was instantly hooked with Leica. I think I've tried all the digital SLRs from each brand, Olympus, Panasonic, Canon, Nikon, Sony... etc... tried half frames, full frames, 4/3s... etc... And somehow leica is just different. Sold most of my gears now, only left with an A900 Sony Body and an 85/1.4 Zeiss Alpha lens - mostly to fund my new gears. I now have a Silver M8, a Steel Grey M9, an old Noct (upgraded to 6-bit), and a new 6-bit 35 cron.. I'm planning to sell my M8 away... So I'm thinking of selling my 35 cron as well, as I think the range is pretty close to my 50... I'm thinking of getting a 28 cron instead, or a 24 elmar... what do you guys think? I only want to have 2 lenses, and 50 noct is definitely one. I wouldn't go tele, so wide is my option. Not TOO wide. Thanks.

Daniel Leung Posted March 27, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 27, 2010 Congrat on your M9. if you intend to keep your Noct which is a 50mm. I would suggest the 2nd one to be the 28mm. by the way. is that the Luigi 1/2 case that you are using? DL
Baptiste Posted March 27, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 27, 2010 Doesn't seem to be a Luigi, more a Leica, isn't it? If it is so, some reported that the Leica half case may create frictions around the strap spots, and lead to early lacquer disappearance. You might check that out on the forum. Nice gear otherwise
Viv Posted March 27, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 27, 2010 The OP asks for advice on lens choice and gets replies about camera cases. What a wonderful forum this is! Buy the 28; not the 24.
Shade Posted March 27, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted March 27, 2010 Thanks for the advice guys.. I'll be checking out the 28mm soon. Is there any sigficant difference between the 28 cron and 28 elmarit? Btw, the case is artisan and artist, so is the strap. The material is very soft inside, I don't think it'll hurt my M. jaapv Posted March 27, 2010 Share #8 Posted March 27, 2010 Basically yes - although I often use it without. With practice you get to know the angle of view of your lenses.
Shade Posted March 27, 2010 Author Share #9 Posted March 27, 2010 I'm going to check out the 28 cron today and see if it will fit me. Also, since I have all these uvir filters on my lenses from my previous m8, is it ok if I leave it on the lens when I'm using the m9? Will it make a difference? The auto-wb in the m9 seems to be more "erratic" compared to m8, is it just me or is it the case? I upgraded to the latest firmware already by the way.. Moreover, I miss that small circle lcd on the top left.. Wonder why Leica excluded it..
jaapv Posted March 27, 2010 Share #10 Posted March 27, 2010 No, you cannot leave the IR filter on an 28 lens on the M9. It will cause color shift in the corners.
Shade Posted March 28, 2010 Author Share #11 Posted March 28, 2010 Jaap: what about leaving the uvir on my noct?
jaapv Posted March 28, 2010 Share #12 Posted March 28, 2010 On a 50 mm it should not be a problem.
Jamie Roberts Posted March 28, 2010 Share #13 Posted March 28, 2010 Buy the 24, not the 28. No, buy the cron not the elmar And keep the 35. The only lenses I've ever regretted selling are Leicas. On the M9 a 35 is an all-purpose walk-around single lens. The 28 is a great normal /wide; but there will come a day when you just want to take a camera out with just a 35. IMO, anyway! Good luck with whatever you get!
rosuna Posted March 28, 2010 Share #14 Posted March 28, 2010 I think most M photographers are 35mm or 50mm centric. There are special cases too (wide-angle guys, for instance). You have to decide where is your gravity centre, depending of the type of photography and personal preferences.
rennsport Posted March 28, 2010 Share #15 Posted March 28, 2010 28 or 24 is really a personal preference. I prefer 24 as it offers a wider angle that allows for more creative and dynamic framing. Going wider than than, especially wider than 20mm, I find it difficult to get a good framing. Again, that's just me.
Shade Posted March 28, 2010 Author Share #16 Posted March 28, 2010 I'm also wondering if there's any significant difference between compressed and uncompressed dng.. I haven't had time to shoot any worthwhile pics, so I have not checked it thoroughly.. Thanks!
Audiocide Posted March 28, 2010 Share #17 Posted March 28, 2010 So I'm thinking of selling my 35 cron as well, as I think the range is pretty close to my 50... I'm thinking of getting a 28 cron instead, or a 24 elmar... what do you guys think? I only want to have 2 lenses, and 50 noct is definitely one. I wouldn't go tele, so wide is my option. Not TOO wide. I don't find a 35 and 50 remotely close. Stating the obvious, but have you tried checking with the frame line switch below the viewfinder? The 35 records a much larger area of what's in front of the camera. I've started out with an 85 prime, and found myself going wider with my lens choices over the years. I love the fun look of a 20 prime on my Canon. But I don't carry a camera bag when I take my Leica out (which I go pretty much everywhere with), so I pick the single most useful lens -- which, for me, is a 35 most of the time. Doesn't seem to be a Luigi, more a Leica, isn't it? If it is so, some reported that the Leica half case may create frictions around the strap spots, and lead to early lacquer disappearance. You might check that out on the forum. Nice gear otherwise Friction? Well, I have taken my Leicas out so much I've kinda stopped worrying about the way they look -- and I've only owned my M7 for a couple of months now. But, of course, I have no plans of reselling it. Different story with the M9, which will be obsolete in a couple of years. It hurts to think I'll be shelling out that much cash yet again when that happens. Shade Posted March 28, 2010 Author Share #18 Posted March 28, 2010 Well okay, I will reconsider about selling my 35 cron.. So any ideas about the difference between compressed and uncompressed dng?
Audiocide Posted March 28, 2010 Share #19 Posted March 28, 2010 Well okay, I will reconsider about selling my 35 cron.. So any ideas about the difference between compressed and uncompressed dng? Well, a 1.5TB hard disk holds about 45,000 uncompressed DNGs. A couple hundred for a big drive surely is a trivial expense after buying an M9. I'd say go for uncompressed. My 135 film scans take up anywhere from 65 to 200megs, so 30-something for the M9 images aren't that large. P.S. Re-reading your post, the 28 Summicron is also supposed to be a great lens. At that length it really starts getting into wide angle territory though, so I suppose you might lose some of the jack-of-all-trades charm of the 35. Shade Posted March 29, 2010 Author Share #20 Posted March 29, 2010 I see - I think I may just keep my 35 cron, or maybe even upgrade it to a 35 lux. I do love the handholdability of fast lenses and shallow dof. However I've read from Steve Huff's site that there seems to be focus shift issues (and quite serious too) - but his was I believe the pre-ASPH? I wonder if the new 6-bit ASPH will have the same problem? Thanks..
