One D2 or Two D2's?

I've been thinking about getting a second D2. My reason for this is that it is a discontinued camera, and I really like the files it produces. It may not be a bad idea to have a second body as a back-up. Any thoughts? Some of you have more than one D2 and I'm wondering what your motives for two D2's were?

Backup. In addition to breaking, cameras can get lost, stolen, etc. I would really miss not having a D2. It's my all-time favorite camera. Period. I hope to always have one with me - that's why I have 3.

If push came to shove and I had to chose between my D2 and my M8 to be my camera for the rest of my life, it would definitely be the D2. Same answer if you replace M8 with M9. It might not be a rational choice, but there must be a reason I choose the D2 most of the time - even though there's an M8 with spanking new 28mm asph 'cron saying "me! me! me!". Crazy, no? But I just "bonded" BIG time with this camera and end up taking my favorite pics with it.

Alberto,

I am having a similar experience. I found love in an unexpected place. Initially I got the D2 just because I wanted a handy point and shoot, and after going through a host of compact Olympus and Canon's I never really liked (too many bells and whistles, and they just never felt right) I decided to try my luck with a used D2. Boy, was I in for a big surprise.

The camera is a bit sluggish but the more I use it, the faster I am able to work with it. The other day someone asked that I do a portrait of their teacher and Buddhist monk, and immediately I thought: "I will use the D2." That was very telling. I can't wait to do the pictures.

You can also choose the Lumix LC1 as a backup..

I'm thinking about it..

This camera is a wonder, I think that it helps to become a better photographer..

Yes the LC1 makes a good alternative to the Digilux 2. I have aquired one to back up my D2 this week and find that differences in IQ are minimal and there are some handling advantages, I prefer the small front and rear grips on the LC1 and the slightly rearranged switch positions. It cost me less than half the price that I paid for my D2 - which is nice.

I agree that they are a 'photographers' camera.

Had two sold one .......................... figured out that we all move on

Unlike Stnami I feel that I have moved on since aquiring these - in the direction I want, not the direction the marketing machines push me!

Got a second one to keep the first one company but now they whisper amongst themselves and plot ways to make it out of the house ahead of the M8. With a degree of success. :D

Pete.

Dang, you too . Perhaps I should keep mine in separate rooms :D.

I have one related 'telling' story to share. One day, I left the house thinking that I had the D2 with me in my camera bag. Half-way to my destination, I wanted to take a photo from the camera while at a stoplight. I open the bag and discovered I had the M8 instead. I drove back to get the D2! The funny part is that I did not remember replacing the D2 with the M8 in the bag. I joked that the D2s wanted to take a break and the 3 of them pushed (and locked) the M8 into the bag.

I also tried taking both the M8 and the D2 on the same outing and I still found myself reaching for the D2 more often. Go figure!

The way I see it, the D2 is like a favorite pair of well-worn jeans, it just fits and feels right in most occasions.

P.S. I am very happy to have an M8u with a great couple of lenses (28mm asph 'cron and 50mm 'cron), I have not intention to sell it and I will continue to use it. But I am not going to deny that I 'play favorites' with the D2.

OK, lets think I get a 2nd Digilux 2 for "backup". Maybe the "unthinkable thing" happens in about 5 years. Is it useful to lay the backup camera in the drawer for that long time period? Sure electronical devices will not be better during the years even not used? In worst case, you turn your backupcamera on and take notice of the fact, that it is also damaged?

Any opinions about that?

Or: do you all use your Digiuxens parallel?

2nd thing: maybe the rechargeables will not be available in 5-6 years from now on?

This problem I get now with my good old wonderful styled D-Lux (I do not want to talk about the DMR...)!

Discussion point: meaningful to have a backup in general? Or skip that, keep some money, and prepare to buy a new other camera for "that day" - we all hope it is in the longtime future?

(By the way: I am not a pessimistic person :D)

I have four of them.... I use them. Electronics should be fine provided you use them. It's when they lie dormant that problems arise.

This does raise and interesting question, though... and not just with respect to the Digilux 2. Will an M8 still function or be serviceable in 20 years? I'm guessing they're not going to be as serviceable as they're film counterparts were/are.

And, without pushing myself toward headache mode, isn't this a misgiving across the entire spectrum of electronics? Are our electronic devices a high-end reflection or the tail end of our disposable mentality? We frown at filling up landfills with plastic containers and all kinds of environmentally unfriendly items... and we continually fret about the costs and social impact.... yet we burn through electronics with reckless abandon whilst throwing huge money at the next flashy replacement.

In the end, I don't see me passing on my Canon 5D MK11 to my son to cherish and use for another decade.... sad considering I MIGHT use it in service for less than half a decade.

Wonder if the pendulum will ever swing the other way?
