j_lir Posted March 25, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 25, 2010 fuck, RIP jim. i was lucky enough to have met him if only for a short moment. he told me the m8 sucks and to grab the m9! hahah! wish i'd had more time to talk to him. i was working across from the morrisson hotel in nyc shooting the xx @ the apple store. popped in to say hi - ended up buying a book. michael keaton & catherine zeta-jones showed up and that was that. here's a couple photos from the time, really makes me sad to read this. guess next time i meet someone i respect so much i need to tell them. cheers jim... Secretly I hoped our paths would cross as I am such a fan of his work and one of the reasons I picked up the Leica brand. So in conversation with one of them today I was wondering if some sort of memorial was happening San Francisco. As Jim had no family and my friend had lost touch with his assistant he was unaware of anything in the works. So I came up with the bright idea to run over to Jim's house (about 4 minutes away door to door) and see if there was possibly a memorial notice on his door with what I imagined to be lots of flowers and bouquets in memoriam. Sadly his doorstep was barren except for some flies and a few pieces of wood as if construction was being done inside his flat. Being that the flat is about two blocks from the Castro, I figured there would be a Flower Shop nearby (there was). Anyway, the lone flower sitting on his doorstep was mine. In his book, "Proof", he included a picture of his Christian mother and (I believe aunts) who fled from that country. It was one of the few pictures that were not of Rock n Roll. John Byrne Cooke, (son of Alistair and a guitarist and shooter), who knew Marshall from Monterey (or some other early festival, perhaps Newport) told me the other day Marshall was one of the first to come in with a motor drive and drill away. This is somewhat contrary to what is written in Proof about decisive moments, etc. Among others of the Assyrian clan are jazz drummer Mousey Alexander (my mother's cousin who played with big bands and Doc Seversen), Mike Agassi, Olympic boxer, his son Andre, Terrence Malick "Thin Red Line," and even Tariq Aziz (aka Michael Youkhana).
