Ah,,,I am new to this forum,,,but am currently in India and opted for a small but quality camera and decided on dlux 4 which i see in your pic! I am so psyched and happy with everything about the dlux 4 I am thinking to get the x1 for the sensor and viewfinder for more "serious" shots, and also because the joy of this new experience with this makers overall quality brings me back to the days when I had a darkroom ,the smell of stop bath,d76,and fixer,,,haha,,it is just so visceral and fantastic.I think my only reservation is the inability to have other lenses,,( a relative poor mans M9) which has me wondering ,but ,its nice to see how much everyone likes this. And I can barely afford it,,not an M9 with the lenses I would want,,,ugh!!!

You're on the right track, and that's all that matters. Enjoy the DL4, a great camera, and when you can, get the X1. Once you get really experienced with either camera, you'll get the results that most other photographers will envy.

I just received my Leica X1 the other day. It looks and feels good. I love all of its round edges and its retro design. It feels comfortable and solid in my hands. The AF is decent and the dials on the top deck click into place. I am not interested in high speed sporting events so the AF looks just fine to me. I love travelling, so the lens and camera size fit the bill. I really dont want to pack extra lenses when i travel. Thanks Leica, you met my needs and made my day.

How could the Leica engineers make this an even better camera? First, I see those three small holes on the top plate. That is a weatherproofing issue. Move them somewhere else. Then beef up the weather and shock proofing. I plan on taking this camera on vacation tours with me. I can promise Leica one thing. I will not be afraid to take it out in the field. Cameras were meant to be carried and used. Otherwise you have an expensive piece of artwork that sits on a glass shelf that you only show to posh friends at cocktail parties.

Second, the battery cover plate does feel a little bit dinky. The rest of the camera feels rock solid. Personally, I would like to see a heavy plate swing into place and clang shut like the hatch on an armored tank. Next, I would not mind having the lens focusing ring around the lens. I wouldn't mind if the addition of a focusing ring made the camera slightly larger. A slightly larger camera might allow a 3 inch higher resolution LCD and more battery power. Does a future X2 need interchangeable lenses? I don't think so. It looks like a fine travelling companion to me. Simplicity is a virtue with this particular camera design.

Got my X1 for a few days. I really love it. It's not just my feeling within this honeymoon period. I've tried many compact film and digital cameras before. My last one is Sigma DP2s. For handling, it's only second to Ricoh GR Digital. I did find it feels much better than I thought. I feel good and secured holding it. No need to add the optional hand grip. This is a surprise to me.

In terms of image quality, I don't need to say more. Simply stunning for such a small camera. And the Leica look. The AF is indeed slow in low light. Similar to DP2s. I can live with it though. I especially like its high ISO performance. This is one of the reasons why I replaced my DP2s with it. DP2s is horrible for anything higher than ISO400.

I believe there is no perfect cameras. Compromises have to be made in designing and making one. For what it is, X1 is wonderful enough to let me enjoy my phototaking experience and record the very moment with great IQ. :)

I have to admit that after some disappointment about the slowish AF the X1 is growing on me. First I thought to just run a test and not keep the camera because my E-P2 feels so much faster.

But for some reason the X1 is really fun to shoot.

One big part is the user interface which is just easy and fast and simple.

The other thing might be its size/weight since it is still a little bit smaller than the E-P2.

So now the head prefers the E-P2 but my heart the X1.

Another thing which works exceptionally well is fill-flash.

Still there are many small things that can be improved by firmware (for example when shooting in manual exposure somewhat the display, the histogram and the exp meter seem to not be inline - which I would prefer to have them inline.

The manual focs wheel would be great if Leica could make it 2 speeds: when turning it fast the distance to change in larger steps and when turning it slow in smaller steps.

On the display they could show the DOF when using MF.

I am still not impressed by the AF but the camera has grown on me quite a bit.

Also after switching the display to "bright" it works better for me now.

Went on a small motorbike-tour. x1 fits good in the pocket of my bike jacket.

It was really difficult for me to decide against the x1. I would have preferred more time but my time to decide ran out. I am right there with you on the head heart thing, and your thoughts on the needed fixes. When leica does that and perhAps corrects some speed issues, it will be at the top of my list I'd think.

It would still be appreciated to have a camera where the heart and the head both say yes.

With the X1 its up and down.

By the way the images I posted look not sharp, the originals do- I dont know what I made wrong but quality was lost when downsizing and posting them.

+1. Head says Ricoh GXR A12, heart X1. The GXR simply betters the Leica in many respects and equals it in IQ.

Still holding on to both and struggling with the decision which one to sell. Once Ricoh comes out with the 28mm module, I'll have to decide.

The GXR suffers from many of the same shortcomings as the X1 and it is even bigger.

I've had that problem occasionally - not severe, but noticeable. I downsize now in 2 steps - one with a resize utility, and then my regular editor to set 72 dpi.

The X1's main shortcomings is speed, incl, AF, write time, file review, start up, shutdown.

The Ricoh GXR is far from being perfect and its AF, though improved considerably after FW upgrade, still is not in the "good" range. Yet it beats the X1 in all and any of the above criteria, in some by country miles.

What other shortcomings where you thinking of? And then there are the many Ricoh strengths..........

Eddie,

My M6 TTl is my only Leica at the moment, also shoot with a Mamiya7 &, a 7II and Two Rollei TLRs. The X1 has me interested in my first move to acquire a digital companion to my M6.

So you would highly recommend it?

Would like to here more about it.

Regards,

Paulo:confused:

Paulo - The X1 is a very polarized camera. Some love it, some don't. It has many weaknesses and quorks (Slow AF, slow interface, no DNG only, etc), but it also has some great strengths. So YOU will have to be the one to decide, but if you have any specific questions, I'll be glad to answer them!

Personally, I love my X1. Great for the kind of photography I do, and with enough work you can minimize the effects of this camera's weaknesses in practical use. Here are some examples:

ISO800 - f/2.8 - 1/60

ISO400 - f/2.8 - 1/100

ISO400 - f/11 - 1/250 - and with a little flash...
