Gentleman Villain Posted March 23, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 23, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Would anyone like to share thoughts on the combination of an MP + motorwinder? Does it work OK? Are there any problems etc? I've found that the motorwinder is going to be a necessary item for my workflow...so now I'm trying to decide whether an MP or an M7 would be my best purchase based on the use of the motorwinder. Would an M7 be a better choice for use with a motorwinder? Thanks for any info

richam Posted March 23, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 23, 2010 Works equally well with any of my steel geared Ms. This includes M4-2, M6TTL, M7, MP.
jpattison Posted March 23, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 23, 2010 I have the motor winder on an M7, which makes it the perfect camera, always ready to shoot, with the auto set. The MP (I think) is a more contemplative machine, for slowing down the way you shoot. I feel it doesn't need to always be ready, but that doesn't stop me wanting an MP! I like the balance of the camera with the motor winder attached, especially with a wrist strap. Best to try it for yourself, at a dealer, or buy an M7/winder second hand, you should be able to sell them without a loss, if you don't like the way it handles. Don't forget you can shoot with the motor turned off, winding on as normal. John
andybarton Posted March 23, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 23, 2010 I also use the winder with my M7. I previously tried the Leicavit, but the experience was less than satisfactory to be honest. Both my M7 and my M2 have either a winder or a grip and I wouldn't use an M without one now.

underground Posted March 23, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 23, 2010 I use my winder on my M7 and its great. I like the way it holds when i shoot. It's funny that I don't always have it turned on when i shoot. be aware it adds a bit of weight !
budrichard Posted March 23, 2010 Share #7 Posted March 23, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) The current Leica device is called a 'Motor M' and is a motor which has two speeds. Thre was an earlier devise termed a 'Winder' whcih had one speed and is to be avoided. That said, Both my M7's usually wear Motor M's and they are great. Relatively quiet compared to an SLR banging away and always function. There is nothing faster than a M7 in AUTO and Motor M. I do have a Leicavit but it is not a stable platform for sequence shooting that the Motor M is and I only use it when carrying just one camera and want to have minimum wieght.-Dick
Xmas Posted March 23, 2010 Share #8 Posted March 23, 2010 Works equally well with any of my steel geared Ms. This includes M4-2, M6TTL, M7, MP. I thought there were problems with early M4-2? underground Posted March 23, 2010 Share #9 Posted March 23, 2010 Leica Camera AG specifies that the motor M is for M7 and MP. The motor M instruction manual states M7, M6TTL, M6, M4-P, and M4-2 Who Knows.

In aperture priority, and motor M. There isn't a faster way that I am aware to shoot an M camera.
aesop Posted March 23, 2010 Share #11 Posted March 23, 2010 ...if speed is of essence, go for the M7 (in AUTO mode) + Motor M. The MP lends itself to an altogether more considered approach.
Gentleman Villain Posted March 23, 2010 Author Share #12 Posted March 23, 2010 Leica Camera AG specifies that the motor M is for M7 and MP.The motor M instruction manual states M7, M6TTL, M6, M4-P, and M4-2 Who Knows. Yes true, that difference confused me and was the reason for starting the thread. I also found a few pictures of MPs + motors floating around the internet and assumed that some people were obviously having success with the combination. Joachim123 Posted March 23, 2010 Share #13 Posted March 23, 2010 Have motor winders on my R4 and M6 I could not do without them. The M6 has the newer style motor winder which is a great improvement over the bulkier older versions. However, if economics dictate you could pick up an older version for a bargain. tobey bilek Posted March 23, 2010 Share #14 Posted March 23, 2010 Some cameras needed to be "mated" to the original winder by service. I forget details as it has been 25 years. It was also not known as a really good product. I don`t want a motor. Try RapidWinder.com
cbretteville Posted March 24, 2010 Share #15 Posted March 24, 2010 Leica Camera AG specifies that the motor M is for M7 and MP.The motor M instruction manual states M7, M6TTL, M6, M4-P, and M4-2 Who Knows. It does work on my M6, I just got one. WIth the grip being the same as the on on my M8 I preferr it to the RapidWinder I tried. My guess would be that Leica specifies current products only on their web site. Carl
