rhythm Posted March 22, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 22, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am completely at loss as to what to do. I looked into adapters and what not and finally found a filter on bhphoto.com for 164 dollars. Then I read this thread, 39mm to Series 7 on Summilux pre-ASPH - Photo.net Leica and Rangefinders Forum saying you can use a 49mm filter and I am confused how this works? My assumption is people have unscrewed the front hood off the base and screwed in a 49mm filter backwards onto the hood base and then screwed the hood onto the back of the filter? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Advertisement Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 Hi rhythm, Take a look here series 7 UV/IR filter solution for 35 summilux pre-asph. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted March 22, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 22, 2010 If you are looking for a series 7 filter you can just buy one at www.foto-huppert.de
bobdubois Posted March 23, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 23, 2010 I use a 49mm B&W 486 filter with the male threads ground off in the dedicated lens hood. This allows me to use a Hamma 49mm snap-in lens cap with the lens hood in place. Regards, Bob
JPH1962 Posted March 23, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 23, 2010 I use an older and rather slim 49mm UV Filter from Minolta in the genuine hood - works perfektly well... rgds JPH
stunsworth Posted March 23, 2010 Share #5 Posted March 23, 2010 The lens hood unscrews into two pieces. You drop the filter - series VII or 49mm - into the bottom half and then screw the two halves together again.
cbretteville Posted March 23, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 23, 2010 I've tried this with a 49mm filter and it works. My experience is that the filer fits best in the hood if you place it face down in the hood. With this lens you should be careful with the light baffle behind the rearmost element. It sticks out a little too far (at least on some of them) so that when you approach infinity focus, the baffle catches on something in the lens throat of the M8 making you having to apply force to push the focus ring all the way to infinity. This is not a problem on film Ms and shouldn't be an issue on the M9. Carl
JPH1962 Posted March 23, 2010 Share #7 Posted March 23, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) it is an issue on both M8 and M9. I had an early 35 lux where I had the problem - my current very late titanium 35 lux has no problem at all. Nice lens with beautifull look! rgds JPH
cbretteville Posted March 23, 2010 Share #8 Posted March 23, 2010 Thanks for the info JPH, another thing is that the baffle can be modified by Leica CS so that it does work properly on the M8/9. Carl

luigi bertolotti Posted April 27, 2010 Share #10 Posted April 27, 2010 Carl, do you know what's involved with correcting this. this? I think it's simply filed away... but glass of rear element is so next to that is better not to try a DIY operation. Time ago, in the forum, a pair of picture were posted, which showed clearly the baffle.
cbretteville Posted April 29, 2010 Share #11 Posted April 29, 2010 I think it's simply filed away... but glass of rear element is so next to that is better not to try a DIY operation. Based on the estimate Leica CS came back with after looking at my lens I would say they're replacing it rather then modifying the old baffle (an email to CS should give a definitive answer). Mine needed a CLA too so it is a bit hard hard to tell what is what. The Norwegian distributor sent in to Solms on March 5th. Eight weeks later it is still not back. ampguy Posted May 7, 2010 Share #12 Posted May 7, 2010 Yes, the BW 486 49mm filter fits the 12504 hood very well. It doesn't screw in at all, it's just that it's the proper diameter and just sits there, tensioned by the hood screwing together. It does fit better backwards, but this is fine, you can also put a very tiny rubber band around the thread edges before locking down to have a very solid setup, as solid as a Leitz VII UV filter in there, which I have in a different non-M8 12504 hood. Also, have a 12504 with a Hoya R72 filter encased. Same method. Works great. I am completely at loss as to what to do.
